Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Tuning Guide — Best S1 Setup

The GT500 is the most violent muscle car I've driven in FH6, bar none. The 5.2-liter supercharged V8 — the Predator engine, and Ford didn't pick that name for nothing. 760hp peaks at 7,500 RPM, but the truly terrifying part is the torque — 847 Nm floods in from 3,000 RPM onward, and the beauty of a supercharger is there's no turbo lag: however deep you press the throttle is exactly how much shove you get. The problem is that 1,885 kg of body trying to put all 760 horses through the rear wheels is a task that's nearly impossible in physics terms.

The S550-platform GT500's chassis is honestly not bad — MagneRide magnetic dampers, the Tremec 7-speed dual-clutch, a carbon-fiber driveshaft; these are track-grade parts. But Ford is still Ford, and the stock suspension is tuned toward understeer — they know most GT500 owners don't want to do a 360 the first time they floor it. FH6 replicates that character perfectly: stock, the entry is safe and the exit is dangerous — when you get on the throttle out of a corner, the supercharger kicks like someone just booted you, the rear tires instantly go up in smoke, and the tail starts walking. It's extremely addictive, but if you want to win races you have to learn to manage it first.

The third-row build may look counterintuitive — less horsepower for more handling. But at 1,885 kg, 700hp is actually the most balanced number for the GT500. The supercharger's torque delivery is naturally brutal, so trimming a little power and spending the PI on suspension and weight reduction makes lap times go down, not up. I personally run the 760hp version day to day — it keeps the GT500's full muscle-car character and uses the chassis to absorb the power.

Tuning Parameters — Every Setting Explained

Tire Pressure

Front: 32.5 PSI, Rear: 31.5 PSI. A 1.9-tonne muscle car — the front tires have to carry the entire weight of a V8 plus a supercharger, and the rears have to hold 847 Nm of torque. Both values run higher than a typical RWD car because the weight is so great. 32.5 PSI up front supports the braking load, and 31.5 PSI out back keeps a good contact patch while stopping the sidewall from being crushed by torque. The rear tire temps spike over long races — if they pass 105 degrees, drop 1.0 PSI.

Gearing

Final Drive Ratio: 3.73 (S1). The Tremec 7-speed dual-clutch already has close ratios, and the 3.73 final drive spreads the seven gears across 0-310km/h nicely. The supercharger's torque curve is flat — from 3,000 to 7,000 RPM there's almost no dip — so shift timing is very forgiving. You can shift at 5,500 or 7,000 RPM and the difference is small. Just don't run it to the 7,500 redline — past 7,000 RPM the boost efficiency falls and power starts fading.

Alignment

Camber: Front -2.5, Rear -2.0. Standard for a heavy front-engine RWD car. The -2.5 up front fights the tire's lateral deformation from 1.9 tonnes loading up on entry — all the weight is in the front half. -2.0 at the rear is already enough to hold corner-exit grip. Toe: Front 0.2, Rear 0.2. A touch of front toe-in keeps the steering from being too twitchy — a 1.9-tonne car with hyper-sensitive steering is hard to manage. The 0.2 rear toe-in is the muscle car's talisman, keeping the tail from breaking loose under big throttle on exit. Caster: 7.0.

Anti-Roll Bars

Front: 34.0, Rear: 30.0. The GT500's front bar has to be much stiffer than the rear — there's a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 in the nose, and the cornering roll is worse than you'd believe. Front 34.0 is a high number, but it's necessary. The rear bar at 30.0 can't be too high — the rear is an independent suspension, and too stiff a bar lifts the inside rear wheel, robbing you of drive traction.

Springs

Front: 750 lb/in, Rear: 650 lb/in. A heavy muscle car can't run soft springs. 750 lb up front holds up the engine plus supercharger, and 650 lb out back controls the rearward weight shift on corner exit. You could go race springs at 850 front / 750 rear, but only on smooth circuits — on anything slightly bumpy, race springs make the GT500 hop like a frog. Ride Height: lowered 1.0 inch. Any lower and you'll hit the wheel arches — the front wheels need room to steer.

Damping

Rebound: Front 9.5, Rear 8.5. Bump: Front 6.5, Rear 5.5. At 1.9 tonnes, the rebound damping becomes extremely important — if the nose rebounds too fast after braking, the body still feels like it's swaying when you turn in. The 6.5 front / 5.5 rear bump is a circuit-and-road compromise — don't go too high; the factory MagneRide philosophy is soft bump, firm rebound.

Aero

The GT500 has an optional carbon-fiber wing and Gurney flap from the factory. In FH6, fit the Forza wing and Forza front splitter, and set the wing downforce to 60%. This car's rear end is extremely unstable at high speed — without aero, the GT500 above 280km/h feels like the rear wheels are floating and the steering wheel goes light. 60% downforce pins the tail down at the cost of roughly 15km/h of top speed, but the high-speed stability you get back is worth it.

Brakes

Balance: 56% Front, Pressure: 115%. The GT500 has the highest brake pressure I've ever tuned — hauling 1.9 tonnes down from 300km/h is a serious job. The front takes 56% of the braking, the rear 44% as support. 115% pressure gives this beast respectable stopping power. If you notice braking distances creeping up over the course of a race, it's not brake fade — your braking line is too aggressive. Try braking earlier and more smoothly.

Differential

Accel Lock: 70%, Decel Lock: 40%. A muscle car's differential has to run high lock. 70% accel lock ensures both rear wheels receive the 847 Nm at the same time — with too little lock, the inside rear wheel spins uselessly as weight shifts outward in corners, and the outside wheel suddenly gets all the torque alone, which means instant snap oversteer. 40% decel lock keeps the tail stable on entry — a front-heavy car lifts its tail slightly under braking, and the decel lock stops the rear wheels from doing their own thing during that process.

Best Race Types

Drag racing — the GT500's home. The supercharger plus big-displacement V8 launch shove is nearly unbeatable in S1. Road racing — very capable on high-speed circuits, but on tight circuits you'll be praying for every corner to be two meters wider. Street racing — workable, but the wide body in the alleys feels like piloting a boat. Drift zones — the GT500 has huge drift potential; the smoke volume and angles from 1.9 tonnes plus 760hp are top-tier, but you'll need to push the diff accel lock above 85%. Dirt tracks — not recommended. Rain — RWD plus muscle car plus wet equals you'd better start braking three corners early.

Tuning Share Codes

The GT500's tuning community splits into two camps — Drag and Track. The Drag camp chases straight-line acceleration and drift fun with softer suspension, lower rear tire pressure, and a fully locked diff. The Track camp wants to turn this muscle car into a genuine track weapon. Both are worth playing depending on your mood. I'm personally in the Track camp — a 1,700 kg muscle car that can kill an S1 circuit is more satisfying than any hypercar.

Common Tuning Mistakes

Rear springs too soft. The most common muscle car mistake — people think soft rear springs add rear grip. In reality, the rearward weight transfer under acceleration at 1.9 tonnes is bigger than you imagine, and soft rear springs let the tail squat on exit; once the suspension bottoms out, the tires bounce off the pavement. Don't go below 600 lb at the rear.

Not enough front camber. Some people think a muscle car doesn't need aggressive front camber. The GT500's nose weight is enough to deform the front tires until the sidewall scrapes in corners, and anything below -2.0 front camber leaves the outer third of the tread completely off the ground in long corners.

Ignoring aero. The GT500's body shape hasn't fundamentally changed since 1967 — at speed it's a brick. Without aero, the GT500 above 300km/h isn't driving, it's negotiating with the laws of physics. You must add a wing, and you must add a front splitter. "Muscle cars don't need aero" is an illusion.
