FH6 Manual Shifting Guide — Ditch Auto, Gain Seconds
If you're still driving automatic in FH6, you're leaving a solid 0.3 to 0.8 seconds per lap on the table — not to mention giving up engine braking, drift control, and half the fun of the game. Switching to manual shifting is the single biggest skill upgrade you can make, and it's way easier than you think.
I made the switch about 200 hours into the Horizon series. For the first 200 hours I was perfectly happy with auto, winning most races against AI on Highly Skilled, thinking "manual can't make that much difference." Then I watched a Rivals ghost in the exact same car pull half a second on me through a single corner because he short-shifted to kill wheelspin while my auto box banged the rev limiter in 1st. That was the day I committed.
Why Manual Is Actually Faster — The Real Numbers
The automatic transmission in FH6 is decent. It shifts quickly, it doesn't miss gears, and for cruising around the map it's perfectly fine. But it makes three decisions that cost you time on every single lap.
1. It shifts at redline, every time, no matter what. Sounds correct, right? Wrong. Most cars in FH6 — especially turbocharged ones — make peak power 500-800 RPM before redline. The torque curve drops off hard in the last few hundred RPM. Your auto box is wringing out every last revolution while your acceleration is actually falling. Manual shifting at peak power (usually 500 RPM before redline) gives you better straight-line speed because you're always in the meat of the powerband.
2. It can't short-shift for traction. Coming out of a tight hairpin in a 900-horsepower RWD car? Mashing the throttle in 1st gear spins the tires and sends you sideways. The auto box has no idea — it just hangs in 1st until redline while your rear tires go up in smoke. Manual lets you grab 2nd gear early at 4,500 RPM, cut the wheelspin, and actually put power down. Same principle applies on wet surfaces, dirt, and any low-grip situation.
3. No engine braking. In auto mode, lifting off the throttle just coasts — the transmission upshifts to reduce engine braking. In manual, you can downshift into corners and use engine compression to slow the car without touching the brake pedal. This is massive for fuel management in long races, for controlling speed through sweepers without upsetting the car's balance, and for setting up corner entry with perfect weight transfer.
Manual vs Manual w/Clutch — Is the Extra Button Worth It?
FH6 gives you three shifting options: Automatic, Manual (no clutch), and Manual with Clutch. The jump from Auto to Manual is life-changing. The jump from Manual to Manual w/Clutch is... smaller, but real.
Manual w/Clutch shifts about 0.1-0.15 seconds faster than Manual alone. The game models clutch engagement time — with the clutch button pressed, gear changes happen instantly rather than the simulated shift delay in regular Manual. Over a lap with 20+ shifts, that adds up to 2-3 seconds. In drag racing, manual w/clutch is mandatory — the shift speed difference at launch can be the entire race.
The downside: it's one more button to manage. Most players map clutch to the LB button (Xbox) or L1 (PlayStation), with shift up on B/Circle and shift down on X/Square. This puts clutch and shift on the same hand, which takes a solid week to feel natural. Some swear by mapping clutch to the A button (Xbox) / X (PlayStation) and pressing clutch+shift with your thumb as one motion. Try both, stick with what feels right after 10 races.
My take: start with Manual (no clutch) for two weeks. Once shifting is muscle memory, add the clutch. Don't try to learn both at once — the frustration will send you back to auto.
Power Shifting — The Technique That Shaves 0.2s Per Straight
Power shifting means keeping the throttle pinned at 100% while you shift. In Manual w/Clutch mode, you clutch in, shift up, clutch out — throttle never lifts. The engine revs spike for a split second during the shift, and when the clutch re-engages you get a tiny burst of wheelspin that keeps the car unsettled in a good way. Done right, power shifting gives you uninterrupted acceleration through every gear change.
The risk: miss the timing and you bounce off the rev limiter for half a second, losing more time than you gained. Power shifting also increases tire wear slightly in longer races — the micro-burst of wheelspin on every upshift adds up over 20 laps. For sprint races under 5 minutes, it's pure upside. For endurance events, shift normally to preserve tires.
On controller, the rhythm is: clutch (LB) + shift up (B) simultaneously, release both, repeat. It becomes a thumb-and-index-finger drum pattern. Practice on a straight highway until you can string 5 power shifts without hitting the limiter — then take it to a track.
When to Short-Shift — Traction Management 101
Short-shifting is grabbing the next gear before the powerband falls off — usually 1,000-1,500 RPM before redline. The scenarios where short-shifting wins races:
- Corner exit in RWD cars: 1st gear at full throttle = instant wheelspin. Short-shift to 2nd at 4,000-4,500 RPM. The lower torque in the higher gear reduces wheelspin while keeping you accelerating.
- Wet surfaces: Every gear change should happen 500-800 RPM earlier than normal. Wet grip can't handle peak torque, so you shift earlier to stay in the controllable part of the powerband.
- Dirt racing: Same logic, amplified. Dirt tires have a narrower grip window. Short-shift aggressively — 1,000-1,500 RPM early — and you'll find yourself pulling away from cars that are spinning all four wheels.
- Uphill sections: Gravity is already loading the engine. Shifting at redline on an incline bogs the next gear. Short-shift 300-500 RPM early to keep momentum through the gear change.
How Manual Shifting Improves Drifting
Drifting in auto is a constant fight. The transmission upshifts when you don't want it to, dropping you out of the powerband mid-drift. Manual gives you complete control — you can sit in 3rd gear at 6,000 RPM through an entire corner, modulating throttle to control angle, without the box second-guessing you.
Manual w/Clutch takes drifting even further. Clutch-kicking — tapping the clutch while on throttle to spike RPM and break traction — is the most reliable way to initiate a drift from grip. Controller Button Layout — What Actually Works
The default layout for Manual w/Clutch puts shift up on B, shift down on X, and clutch on LB. For most people this is awkward — your left index finger manages clutch while your right thumb handles gear changes. Here are three layouts the FH6 community actually uses:

Try all three for 5 races each. The one where you stop thinking about the buttons wins.
Learning Curve — How Long to Adapt
Realistic timeline based on playing 1-2 hours per day:
- Day 1-3: Feels terrible. You'll miss shifts, bounce the limiter, money-shift into 1st at 120 mph and grenade your engine. You'll lose races to AI you normally beat. This is normal — push through.
- Day 4-7: Shifting becomes semi-automatic. You still glance at the tachometer but your thumb moves before you consciously decide. You'll start winning again.
- Week 2: You downshift into corners without thinking. Engine braking becomes instinctive. You wonder how you ever played auto.
- Week 3+ (clutch): Adding clutch resets some of the muscle memory. Plan for 3-4 days of feeling clumsy again before it clicks.
Track Test Results — Auto vs Manual vs Manual w/Clutch
I ran 10 clean laps with each setting in the same car — a 2020 Porsche 911 GT3 at S1 900, no tuning changes, dry conditions. Average of 10 laps, throwing out the best and worst:

The longer the track and the more corners (read: more shifts), the bigger the advantage. On Volcán with its 30+ gear changes per lap, manual w/clutch gained over 2 seconds. That's an eternity in Rivals.
