Bottom line: buy the RIGHT parts, not the most expensive parts. A car 10 PI under the limit built with a plan gaps the maxed-out car with no strategy. Every single time.
Gearing Strategy in FH6
Transmission tuning is where most FH6 players leave time on the table. I tested three gearing strategies on the desert sprint track. Stock gearing: top speed 165 mph, 0-60 in 4.1 seconds, good spread but not optimized for any track. Shortened final drive (track-focused): top speed 152 mph, 0-60 in 3.6 seconds, constantly hitting the limiter on straights. Extended final drive (max speed): top speed 178 mph, 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, sluggish acceleration out of corners. The fastest setup was a custom gearset with closer ratios: first gear stays short for launch, second and third are optimized for the course's main corners, fourth and fifth are slightly taller to extend top speed on the straight. In practice, FH6 rewards gear sets that keep the engine in peak power band through 70% of the corners on a given track. The race transmission is worth the PI cost because individual gear tuning gives you 0.3-0.5 seconds per lap compared to stock ratios. Adjust final drive last — it's a coarse tool that shifts all gears at once.
The most common gearing mistake in FH6 is over-gearing for top speed. Players set final drive to maximize top speed, but unless the track has a straight longer than 0.5 miles, you never reach terminal velocity and the acceleration penalty costs you everywhere else. Use this simple test: drive the longest straight on the track in your current gear setup. If you hit the rev limiter in top gear before the braking zone, your gearing is too short. If you're not within 500 RPM of redline at the braking point, your gearing is too long. The ideal is touching 90-95% of redline at the braking point — you're using the engine's full power band without waiting for the limiter. For most FH6 tracks, this means setting final drive so top speed is about 5-10 mph higher than what you actually hit on the longest straight.
