The 300 SL is a car you shouldn't look at through rational eyes. It's the 1954 gullwing-door coupe that took the 300 SLR's race-winning tech and made it road-legal — the world's first production car with gasoline direct injection. The 3.0-liter straight-six made 215hp in an era when that was supercar territory, and those doors that open upward aren't just for show: they're there because the tubular frame sits too high for conventional doors. FH6 recreates the 300 SL remarkably well — the steering is stupid heavy, the brakes need to be hit three days in advance, and shifting feels like deadlifting at the gym.
But that's exactly the 300 SL's charm. 1,100kg of weight with an FR layout and a rear-mounted transaxle gearbox gives a near-50:50 front-rear weight distribution. 215hp sounds like grocery-getter power today, but don't forget it only weighs 1,100kg — a power-to-weight ratio close to 200hp/ton, higher than a lot of modern sport sedans. B class is the only sensible class for the 300 SL. A class isn't out of the question — swapping cams and the fuel system can push power to around 280hp, but doing that is like wrecking a piece of history. 215hp is just right for B-class racing; whether you win comes down to your cornering.
Tuning Parameters — Every Setting Explained
Tire Pressure
Front 28.0 PSI, Rear 28.0 PSI. 1950s narrow tires — the modern sports-car pressure theory doesn't apply here. Low pressure maximizes the contact patch, because the tires aren't wide to begin with. Front and rear are equal because the 1,100kg is evenly distributed. Don't go above 30 — narrow tires just shrink their contact patch at higher pressure.
Transmission
Final Drive Ratio: 3.80. The 300 SL only has 4 forward gears — a hallmark of race cars of this era. With 4 gears and a 3.80 final drive, 4th gear hits redline at around 245km/h. Note there's a clear rev drop between 2nd and 3rd — give the revs time to fall when you shift manually, don't yank it like a modern sequential box.
Alignment

Anti-Roll Bars
Front 26.0, Rear 22.0. Body roll was completely normal in the 1950s — a tubular frame is nowhere near as rigid as a modern monocoque. The 26 front bar controls entry roll, and the 22 rear bar is conservative but sensible. Pushing the rear bar past 25 makes the rear axle suddenly lose grip mid-corner — narrow tires have very low tolerance for roll.
Springs
Front 400 lb/in, Rear 350 lb/in. Light body, soft springs — that's the correct recipe for the 300 SL. Stiff springs don't just ruin the car's mechanical feel, they make the narrow tires lose contact over every bump. Lower 0.5 inches — its stock ride height is already very low.
Damping
Rebound: Front 6.0, Rear 5.5. Bump: Front 3.5, Rear 3.0. Soft damping lets the body roll a certain amount — that's not a bad thing. 1950s drivers read grip limits through body roll. Setting the damping too high makes the car snap past the limit with no feedback.
Aero
The 300 SL is basically zero aero stock — the body design is all about streamlining, not downforce. At speed, airflow under the body generates some lift on the rear axle. Adding a small rear spoiler (35% downforce) stabilizes the tail above 190km/h. Don't bolt on a big wing — visually it ruins the car.
Brakes
Balance: 55% front, Pressure: 90%. This is the part of tuning the 300 SL that needs the most patience — 1950s drum brakes are basically decorative by modern standards. 90% pressure is already the limit; any higher and the brakes overheat and fade after 3-4 corners. Leave plenty of braking distance and brake early.
Differential
Accel: 60%, Decel: 35%. This car has an open differential stock, so adding a limited-slip diff is a necessity. 60% accel lock isn't high — narrow tires plus a high lock value cause exit understeer. 35% decel lock helps keep the tail stable under braking.

Common Tuning Mistakes
Using modern tire-pressure settings. Above 30 PSI on the 300 SL's narrow tires is like driving on ice — the contact patch shrinks, grip drops, and braking distances grow.
Anti-roll bars too stiff. You add bars to cure body roll — but a 1950s tubular frame twists, so with the bars too stiff the roll is controlled, but the chassis twist makes the tires lose contact.
Ignoring brake overheating. The drum brakes start fading after 3-4 fast corners. Conserve the brakes for the first two laps and they'll be more stable for the rest of the race.
