FH6 Tire Compound Guide — Pick the Right Rubber

I've run lap time comparisons on every compound across six track types and three weather conditions. The tire menu in FH6 gives you seven compounds and a vague grip bar. That bar lies. Here's what each compound actually does, when to use it, and — critically — when NOT to use it.

Is Race Tire PI Worth It?
The short answer: usually not. Race tires cost 40-60 PI points. That's the budget of an entire engine swap or a full weight reduction kit. On most tracks, the lap time gained from race tires over semi-slicks is 0.3-0.5 seconds — but the PI could instead get you 100+ horsepower, which might gain you 1.5 seconds on straights. The math only works on handling-heavy circuits with short straights, like the Castillo Del Sol layout.
Race tires also have the worst wet grip of any road compound. If the race starts dry but rain hits on lap 3, you're driving on ice while everyone on sport tires cruises past. I've lost more races to race tires in mixed conditions than any other tuning mistake.
Best Tire Per Class — My Tier List

Tire Pressure and Compound Interaction
Tire pressure changes how each compound behaves. Drop pressure 2-3 PSI below default on semi-slicks and race tires — it spreads the contact patch and delays overheating by about half a lap. Raise pressure 1-2 PSI on sport tires for better steering response. Drag tires want the lowest possible rear pressure (22-24 PSI) for maximum launch footprint, and highest possible front pressure (38-40 PSI) to reduce rolling resistance. The pressure sweet spot moves about 1.5 PSI per compound step — you can't just copy settings from one build to another.
Weather Effects on Tires
Rain cuts grip by roughly 40% on semi-slicks and 50% on race tires. Sport tires lose about 25%. Street tires lose 20%. The pattern is clear — the grippier the dry compound, the worse it handles water. Off-road and rally compounds barely notice rain on dirt, but on wet asphalt they're slightly worse than sport tires.
For wet season racing, sport tires are the undisputed king. They have enough dry grip to not feel slow, and their wet performance gap over semi-slicks is enormous — I've measured 2+ seconds per lap on a wet circuit. The single best wet-weather upgrade in FH6 is downgrading from semi-slick to sport tires.
Off-Road vs Rally — The Split
Pure off-road tires give you maximum dirt grip but you drift like a boat on any asphalt section. Rally tires split the difference — 7/10 on both surfaces. If the race is 100% dirt (like Rainforest Trail), go off-road race compound. If it's mixed surface — even 70/30 dirt/road — rally tires are faster overall. The time lost on dirt sections with rally tires is smaller than the time lost on road sections with off-road tires.
Tire Width and Compound Choice
Wider tires amplify compound differences. A 275mm semi-slick grips more than a 225mm race tire on most turns because the contact patch advantage compounds the rubber advantage. If you're tight on PI, upgrade tire width first — it costs less PI than a compound change and gives roughly 60% of the grip benefit. Then decide if you need the remaining 40% from a compound swap. Front tire width matters more than rear on AWD cars; rear width matters more on RWD.
