Speed zones are the thinking person's PR stunt. Unlike speed traps where you just go fast in a straight line, speed zones measure your average speed through a winding sector that typically has at least two corners and often an elevation change. The trap most players fall into is treating speed zones like speed traps — picking the highest-horsepower car, pointing it at the entry gate, and hoping for the best. That gets you two stars at most. Three stars requires a car that corners well, a line that sacrifices zero speed through the sector's tightest section, and an understanding of exactly where the zone starts and ends so you can optimize your entry and exit speeds. Best Cars for Speed Zones — Grip Over Power
Speed zones reward handling, not horsepower. The ideal speed zone car has high cornering grip, good acceleration out of slow corners, and enough top speed to not bounce off the limiter on the fastest sector. That last point is important — if your car tops out at 170 mph and the zone's 3-star target is 175 mph, you mathematically cannot three-star it regardless of how well you drive. For the fastest zones (Coastal Sweep, Bridge Run), you need a car with at least 190-200 mph top speed potential.
The McLaren Senna is the speed zone meta for a reason. 800 kg of downforce at speed means it carries more corner speed than any other car in the game. On the Mountain Descent zone, where the sector is a series of downhill sweepers with barely any straights, the Senna posts average speeds 8-10 mph higher than cars with 300 more horsepower. The Ferrari FXX-K Evo is a close second — the active aero adjusts in real time and the hybrid system fills torque gaps out of slow corners. For budget builds, the Mosler MT900S at about 300k credits is within 3-5 mph of the Senna on most zones and is available from the Autoshow without auction house hunting.
For tight urban zones (City Circuit, Jungle Pass), consider a smaller car. The BAC Mono weighs 580 kg and has a tiny footprint — you can take lines through Guanajuato's alleys that wider cars physically cannot fit through. The Lotus Elise GT1 is the mid-range alternative, with a 1,000 kg curb weight and race car geometry that rotates on command. Nobody talks about these for speed zones because everyone defaults to hypercars, but check the leaderboards — the top City Circuit times are almost all in lightweight track cars, not Jesko variants.
Cornering Strategy — Maintain Average Speed Through the Sector
The scoring math on speed zones is simple: the game takes your speed readings at multiple checkpoints within the sector and averages them. This means one slow corner tanks your average far more than one fast straight boosts it. You get more score improvement from raising the minimum speed through the sector's slowest corner by 5 mph than from raising the maximum speed on the straight by 20 mph. This is the fundamental speed zone insight and the thing most players get wrong on their first 20 attempts.
Practical application: identify the slowest corner in the sector before you enter it. Scout it with drone mode if you need to. That corner is your bottleneck — everything else is secondary. Your approach to the sector should be set up to maximize speed through that specific corner. If it's a tight hairpin, you want a late apex line that sacrifices entry speed for exit speed because speed zones measure speed AT each checkpoint, and if the checkpoint is at corner exit, entry speed doesn't matter. If the checkpoint is mid-corner, you want the geometric racing line — widest possible arc, maximum possible radius — because that's the line that preserves the highest minimum speed through the corner.
Throttle control through the sector: never coast. Speed zones penalize you for every tenth of a second you're not accelerating. If you're between corners, you should be either on the throttle or on the brake — coasting means your speed is dropping while the clock is still ticking. This is where trail braking becomes essential. You brake later and carry braking into the corner, which keeps weight on the front tires for turn-in while maintaining higher average speed through the braking zone itself.
Critical detail: speed zones measure your speed in both directions. If a zone is two-way (most are), the game records your speed regardless of which gate you enter. Some zones are faster in one direction than the other — usually because the corner sequence favors approach from one side. Mountain Descent, for example, is about 8 mph faster going downhill than uphill, which is obvious, but less obvious zones like Reservoir Circuit are 3-5 mph faster clockwise because the camber of the road surface favors right-hand sweepers over left-hand ones. Run every zone both ways and compare average speeds before committing to a direction.
