FH6 Drift Zones — Hit Every Score Target

Drift zones in FH6 score you on three variables simultaneously: drift angle, speed, and line placement. Angle gives the highest base score multiplier, speed determines how fast points accumulate, and line keeps you inside the zone boundary where drift points actually count. The scoring formula roughly works out to (angle x speed x line fidelity) per second, meaning losing one variable tanks your score faster than you'd think. A perfect-angle drift at 20 mph scores less than a moderate-angle drift at 60 mph. A fast, wide drift that clips the zone boundary with one wheel scores less than a slightly slower drift that stays dead center. Here's every drift zone, the 3-star targets, and the technique for each.

Best Drift Cars Per Zone Type

Drift car choice matters more than tune setup in FH6, and the right car for Mountain Hairpins is not the right car for Industrial Drift. The variable is wheelbase length. Short wheelbase cars (Nissan Silvia S15, Mazda RX-7 FD, Toyota Sprinter Trueno) rotate faster and transition between directions more quickly — ideal for tight zones with rapid direction changes. Long wheelbase cars (Ford Mustang RTR, BMW M4, Nissan GT-R) hold drift angle more stably at high speed — ideal for wide, fast zones where you're drifting at 80+ mph through long sweepers.

For tight hairpin zones (Mountain, Jungle, City Sweep): the Formula Drift Nissan 370Z is the out-of-the-box champion. Pre-tuned with 1,000+ hp, drift suspension, and a steering angle kit from the factory. The short wheelbase lets it pivot between hairpins without losing the drift chain. The Hoonigan Twerkstallion is the alternative — slightly longer wheelbase but more forgiving power delivery for players still learning drift zone rhythm. For budget options, the Mazda RX-7 with the 4-rotor engine swap and drift suspension will match the Formula Drift cars on tight zones for about 200k total build cost.

For wide sweeper zones (Reservoir, Coastal, Industrial): the Formula Drift Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5. Longer wheelbase, 1,200 hp, and enough tire width to drift at 100+ mph through the Reservoir Loop's long left-hand sweeper without the rear end trying to overtake the front. The Hoonicorn (Ken Block's Mustang) is even better if you have it — AWD drift capability means you can power through the zone with all four wheels sliding, which generates score faster than RWD drifting because the game doesn't penalize AWD drifts as heavily as it did in FH5. The BAC Mono, oddly, is a sleeper pick for wide drift zones — weighs nothing, rotates on command, and the mid-engine layout means you can transition mid-drift with throttle modulation alone, no clutch kick needed.

For dirt zones (Desert Sweep): AWD is strongly recommended. The Hoonigan RS200 with drift tires and rally suspension can hold a slide on dirt at angles RWD cars can't touch without spinning. The Subaru WRX STI with the rally engine swap and drift suspension is the budget dirt drift car — AWD, short enough wheelbase for the Desert Sweep's sequence, and enough ground clearance for the rutted sections.

Drift Zone Technique — Maximize Angle + Speed + Line Simultaneously

The scoring system is multiplicative, not additive. A drift with perfect angle and perfect speed but one wheel outside the zone boundary scores zero for those frames. A drift dead-center in the zone at perfect speed but 15 degrees of angle scores maybe 60% of what the same drift scores at 45 degrees. The method is: enter fast enough to carry speed, initiate the drift early enough to get angle before the scoring zone starts, modulate throttle to balance angle against forward speed, and place the car where the zone boundary is widest.

Zone boundary placement: drift zones in FH6 are trapezoids — wider at the entry, narrower in the middle, widest at the exit. The scoring zone is the area between the flags. If you stay on the inside edge (closest to the apex), you're drifting through the narrowest part of the zone — less margin for error, harder to maintain angle without clipping the outside flag. If you stay on the outside edge, you're in the widest part of the zone — more room to hold angle, more room to recover if the rear steps out too far. Drift the outside line. It looks less elegant than a tight inside line but it scores better because you can hold more angle for longer without risking a zone boundary violation.

Transition technique: when a drift zone changes direction (left to right, etc.), you lose score during the transition because the car is momentarily neutral. Minimize transition time. Initiate the reverse drift BEFORE the car has fully straightened. This means you're flicking the car into the opposite direction while it's still sliding — the car never goes straight, so score never drops to zero. This is called "manji-ing" through the zone and it's the technique every top-100 drift zone leaderboard run uses. The car is always at some angle, always accumulating points, even through transitions that look like they should break the chain.

Throttle modulation: drift zones reward continuous throttle input. If you lift off completely, speed drops and angle decreases — score drops on both variables. If you go full throttle constantly, the rear steps out past the grip threshold and you spin — score drops to zero. The sweet spot is 60-80% throttle through the zone, feathering up to full throttle only when the car is settled at a stable angle. This takes practice per car because the throttle-to-angle relationship changes with every tune setup, but the principle is universal: steady partial throttle outperforms binary on/off throttle in every drift zone in FH6.

E-Brake vs Clutch Kick vs Scandinavian Flick — Per Zone Type

Three ways to initiate a drift in FH6. Each has a specific scenario where it's optimal.

E-Brake (Handbrake) Initiation

Pull the handbrake briefly while turning in — locks the rear wheels, breaks traction, initiates slide. Best for: tight hairpin entries where you need to rotate the car quickly at low speed. Use on Mountain Hairpins, Jungle Hairpins, and any zone where the entry speed is below 50 mph and the corner is more than 90 degrees. The e-brake kills speed, so don't hold it — tap it just long enough to start the slide, then immediately get back on throttle. Holding the e-brake through the corner is the most common mistake in drift zones; it drags your speed down and the score-per-second drops with it. Clutch Kick Initiation

Clutch in, rev the engine, dump the clutch while turning — sends a torque spike to the rear wheels that breaks traction instantly without the speed penalty of the e-brake. Best for: medium-speed entries (50-80 mph) where you need to break traction but can't afford to lose momentum. Use on Coastal Twisties, Reservoir Loop, and any zone with long sweepers where maintaining entry speed is critical to hitting the 3-star score. Clutch kick requires manual with clutch transmission setting, which is annoying to learn if you've been on manual (no clutch) or automatic, but the score difference is real — clutch kick entries score 10-15% higher per zone than e-brake entries because you carry more speed through the first scoring gate. If you're serious about drift zone leaderboards, learn clutch kicking. If you just want 3 stars on all zones, e-brake is fine for everything except the very high-score zones (Mountain Hairpins at 110,000, Reservoir Loop at 105,000).

Scandinavian Flick Initiation

Turn away from the corner first (opposite lock), then flick the car into the corner — the weight transfer breaks rear traction without any brake or clutch input. Best for: high-speed entries (80+ mph) where pulling the e-brake at speed would send you into the barrier, and clutch kicking at speed would cause uncontrollable wheelspin. Use on Industrial Drift and the fastest sectors of Coastal Twisties. The Scandinavian flick is the highest-skill initiation method because the timing is precise — flick too early and the car straightens before the corner, flick too late and you understeer into the outside barrier. But when executed correctly, it preserves more entry speed than any other method and the score-per-second advantage compounds through the entire zone. One last thing: drift zones score you higher in the second half of the zone than the first — FH6 applies a cumulative multiplier that ramps up as long as you maintain an unbroken drift chain. If you break the chain mid-zone (car straightens or goes out of bounds), the multiplier resets and you're back to base scoring. This means a zone you drift cleanly from gate to gate will always outscore a zone where you post bigger individual corner scores but reset between them. Keep the chain unbroken. Even a mediocre drift that never straightens scores better than alternating between spectacular drifts and straight sections. The chain is everything.
