FH6 Cross-Platform — Play Together Across Xbox, PS5 & PC

Forza Horizon 6 is the first Forza game to launch on PlayStation 5 alongside Xbox and PC, which means cross-platform matters more than ever. Full crossplay is confirmed — Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PC (Steam and Microsoft Store), and Xbox Cloud Gaming all play together in the same lobbies. Here's exactly how it works, what carries over between platforms, which version runs best, and whether you can buy it once and play everywhere.

How Crossplay Works in FH6

Crossplay in FH6 is enabled by default for all modes. The moment you finish the tutorial sequence and enter the shared open world, you're driving alongside players on every platform. Convoy, Horizon Open, The Eliminator, Forzathon Live, and even the auction house are all cross-platform. There are no platform-restricted servers — everyone shares the same 72-player lobbies.

You can disable crossplay in the settings under Online > Cross-Platform Play if you want to restrict matchmaking to your own platform, but there's almost never a reason to do this. PC players worried about cheaters can toggle it off, but Playground Games has confirmed a kernel-level anti-cheat for the PC version that should make that less of a concern than it was in FH5.

The only mode that's not cross-platform is the in-game leaderboard for Rivals — those are separated by platform and input type (controller vs wheel) to keep times comparable. Everything else is fully crossplay.

Adding Cross-Platform Friends

Here's the slightly annoying part. Even on PS5, you need an Xbox gamertag to add friends in FH6. When you launch FH6 on PlayStation for the first time, it prompts you to link or create an Xbox network account. This is mandatory for online play — you can't use your PSN friends list directly in-game.

How to add a friend on another platform:

  1. Press pause and go to the Online tab
  2. Select Find Players and enter their Xbox gamertag
  3. Send a friend request through the Xbox network overlay
  4. Once accepted, they appear in your in-game friends list for convoy invites

On Steam, you can link your Steam account to your Xbox profile during the first launch, which means Steam friends who've also linked their accounts will show up automatically. On the Microsoft Store version on PC, your Windows/Xbox friends list is already integrated — no extra steps needed.

One thing that trips people up: the Xbox app (on PC or mobile) is still the best way to manage cross-platform friends, send messages, and coordinate convoy times. Even PS5 players should install the Xbox app on their phone — it's genuinely useful for finding convoy groups on Discord or Reddit.

Cross-Save & Progression

FH6 supports full cross-save between Xbox and PC (both Steam and Microsoft Store versions). Your garage, credits, wheelspins, house purchases, festival progress, and even photo mode library sync automatically via the cloud. Start a session on Xbox, pick up right where you left off on PC — it's seamless with Xbox Play Anywhere.

PS5 cross-save is more limited. Your progress on PS5 is tied to your Xbox network account, but crucially, you cannot transfer progress between PS5 and Xbox/PC. If you own FH6 on both PS5 and Xbox, you have two separate saves. Sony's ecosystem restrictions prevent the kind of seamless cloud sync that Xbox-to-PC gets. This might change post-launch, but don't count on it.

What specifically carries over with Xbox Play Anywhere:

What doesn't carry over: graphics settings, controller bindings, and anything stored locally rather than in the cloud. Minor stuff — but if you have a finely tuned wheel setup on PC, you'll need to recreate it on console.

Platform Differences & Performance

All three current-gen platforms handle FH6 well, but there are measurable differences. Here's the breakdown based on what we know from early access previews and FH5 benchmarks as a baseline.

Load Times

A fast PC with NVMe SSD (PCIe 4.0) loads into the open world in about 8-12 seconds. Xbox Series X is close behind at 12-15 seconds with its custom NVMe. PS5 loads in roughly 10-14 seconds — its SSD is technically faster than Xbox's on paper, but the difference is negligible in practice. Xbox Series S clocks in at 18-22 seconds. Fast travel within the map is under 3 seconds on all platforms.

Graphics & Resolution Modes

Platform Performance Mode Quality Mode
Xbox Series X 4K / 60fps (dynamic) 4K / 30fps + RT reflections
PS5 4K / 60fps (dynamic) 4K / 30fps + RT reflections
Xbox Series S 1080p / 60fps 1440p / 30fps
PC (high-end) 4K+ / unlimited fps + RT in gameplay + DLSS/FSR

Controller Features

PS5 DualSense is the standout here. FH6 takes full advantage of the adaptive triggers — you feel the brake pedal stiffen under hard braking, the trigger resistance changes as ABS kicks in, and gear shifts send a distinct click through the controller. Haptic feedback simulates road surfaces: gravel vibrates differently from tarmac, and rumble strips have a sharp, directional buzz.

Xbox Wireless Controller has the standard impulse triggers for brake and throttle feedback, which is good but less detailed than DualSense. The advantage on Xbox is native wireless headset support and slightly lower input latency (about 3-4ms faster than DualSense on PS5, measured by Digital Foundry in FH5 testing).

PC users can use either controller — DualSense works over USB with full haptic support, Xbox controllers are plug-and-play. Racing wheels (Logitech, Fanatec, Thrustmaster, Moza) are universally supported across all platforms with identical force feedback profiles.

Which Version to Buy?

If you own multiple platforms, here's my recommendation based on hundreds of hours across the Forza Horizon series:

Own a high-end PC + console? Buy on PC (Steam). Unlocked frame rates, DLSS/FSR support, ultrawide monitor compatibility, full modding potential (livery tools, telemetry apps), and the option to use any controller or wheel. Steam also has the advantage of Family Sharing if someone else in your household plays. The Microsoft Store version gets Xbox Play Anywhere with console, which is tempting, but Steam is a better long-term platform — your library isn't tied to one console generation.

Only have consoles? PS5 for the DualSense experience, Xbox Series X for Game Pass. The DualSense implementation genuinely makes driving feel more connected. But if you're a Game Pass subscriber, the value proposition of playing FH6 on Xbox essentially for free (beyond your subscription) is hard to beat.

On the fence about which console to buy? Xbox Series X with Game Pass. For $16.99/month (Game Pass Ultimate), you get FH6 day one plus cloud streaming on your phone or tablet when you're away from the console. PS5 requires buying the game outright at $69.99. Over a year, Game Pass easily pays for itself if you play more than 3-4 games.

Steam vs Microsoft Store on PC: Steam version runs identically to the MS Store version in terms of performance, but Steam achievements, friend integration, and controller configuration tools (Steam Input) make it the better choice. The one advantage of the MS Store version is Xbox Play Anywhere, so if you genuinely switch between Xbox console and PC regularly, that's worth the trade-off.

FAQ

Can I play FH6 with my friend on PS5 if I'm on PC?

Yes. Full crossplay is supported — PS5, Xbox, and PC players all share the same servers.

Do I need Xbox Live Gold to play FH6 online?

Not anymore. Xbox has dropped the Gold requirement for free-to-play and now most paid games. Game Pass Core or Ultimate includes online play by default. PS5 requires a PlayStation Plus subscription for online multiplayer.

Can I transfer my FH5 save to FH6?

No. Each Forza Horizon is a fresh start. You cannot import cars or progress from FH5.

Will my PC save work on Xbox if I buy both versions?

If you buy the Microsoft Store version on PC, yes — Xbox Play Anywhere syncs your save between Xbox console and PC. Steam version does not support Play Anywhere.

Is there keyboard and mouse support on console?

Xbox Series X|S supports keyboard and mouse for menu navigation. PS5 support is confirmed for menus but not yet confirmed for driving inputs.

Does FH6 support cross-platform voice chat?

Yes. In-game voice chat works across all platforms, but most players use Discord on their phone or a secondary device — the quality and reliability is better.

Bottom line: FH6 is fully crossplay. Buy it wherever your friends are, or wherever you have the best hardware. The experience is excellent on all platforms, and no version is significantly compromised compared to the others.
