FH6 Best PC Settings — Maximum FPS Without Sacrificing Visuals

Forza Horizon 6 is a demanding game. It looks stunning at Ultra but it'll bring an RTX 3060 to its knees at 1440p. The good news is that the difference between Ultra and High in motion is almost invisible, but the FPS gap is massive. After testing every setting individually across three GPUs and comparing frame times with CapFrameX, here's where the real performance lives and what you can safely turn down without making the game look like a PS3 title.

One thing before we dive in: FH6 is unusually CPU-heavy in the open world. Even with a 4090 you'll bottleneck at the CPU during busy Festival scenes and in Guanajuato. If your GPU usage drops below 90%, that's a CPU limit, not a GPU one. No graphics setting will fix it.

The Settings That Actually Matter — Ranked by Impact

I tested every graphics option in FH6 by toggling one at a time at 1440p on an RTX 4070, measuring the FPS delta. Here's what moves the needle in order of impact.

Ray Tracing Quality (25-40% FPS hit from Off to Ultra): The heaviest single setting in the game. FH6 uses ray tracing for car reflections and ambient occlusion. In photo mode and Forzavista it's gorgeous. During actual racing at 100+ mph? You won't notice it. Turn it off for gameplay, toggle it on for photos. If you must have it, Ray Tracing High is the sweet spot — you get car self-reflections without the AO overhead. Ultra adds ray-traced ambient occlusion that costs 15% more FPS for a subtle shading improvement you'll only spot in still images.

Environment Texture Quality (5-15% impact between Medium and Extreme): This is mostly VRAM-dependent. Extreme textures need 10GB+. If you have an 8GB card like the RTX 3070 or 4060 Ti, stick to High. The visual difference between High and Extreme at 1440p is marginal — slightly sharper road surfaces and building facades when you stop and look, which nobody does in a racing game. At 4K the gap is more visible, so push to Extreme if you have the VRAM headroom.

Environment Geometry Quality (5-12% impact): Controls draw distance for buildings, trees, and terrain detail. Ultra pushes foliage and distant structures further out. High gives you 90% of the visual quality for noticeably better frame pacing, especially during fast transitions between zones. This is worth keeping at High on anything below a 4080.

Shadow Quality (3-8% impact): Ultra shadows are sharper and render further. High is close enough. The real win is turning shadow resolution down slightly — the soft shadows in FH6 look more natural anyway. Never go below Medium though, shadows start to flicker and shimmer.

Reflection Quality (3-7% impact): Screen-space reflections on Ultra are slightly cleaner at shallow angles. High looks identical 95% of the time. The resolution bump from High to Ultra is barely perceptible even in side-by-side comparisons.

SSAO Quality (2-5% impact): Ambient occlusion adds subtle shadowing in crevices and under the car. High gives you the full effect. Ultra adds negligible improvement for a measurable frame time cost.

Everything else: MSAA (2x vs 8x does matter, 4x is the sweet spot), Motion Blur (personal preference, zero performance cost), Lens Effects, and Particle Effects Quality are all under 3% impact individually. Set them to taste, they won't make or break your frame rate.

GPU-Tier Recommended Settings

Entry-Level (GTX 1660 Super / RTX 3050 / RX 6600) — Target: 1080p 60 FPS: Preset Low-Medium. Dynamic Optimization On with target 60 FPS. Resolution Scale at 1080p native. MSAA 2x, FXAA On. Texture Quality Medium, Geometry Medium. Shadows Low. Reflections Low. SSAO Off. Motion Blur Off. Ray Tracing Off. DLSS/FSR set to Quality mode. This rig will hold 60 FPS in races and dip to 50-55 in Guanajuato. It's playable and looks decent.

Mid-Range (RTX 3060 / RTX 4060 / RX 6700 XT) — Target: 1440p 60+ FPS: Preset High. Dynamic Optimization Off — you have enough headroom. DLSS Quality at 1440p. MSAA 4x. Texture Quality High (not Extreme on 8GB cards). Geometry High. Shadows High. Reflections High. SSAO High. Ray Tracing Off for racing, High for free roam if you want. This config averages 75-85 FPS on the RTX 4060 at 1440p with drops to the mid-60s in the city. Smooth and sharp.

High-End (RTX 4070 / RTX 4070 Ti / RX 7900 XT) — Target: 1440p 100+ FPS or 4K 60: Preset Ultra as baseline, then dial down the waste. DLSS Quality at 1440p or Balanced at 4K. MSAA 4x. Texture Quality Extreme (12GB VRAM handles it). Geometry High — Ultra adds almost nothing at speed. Shadows High. Reflections High. SSAO High. Ray Tracing Off unless you're taking photos. This setup pushes 110-130 FPS at 1440p and holds a locked 60 at 4K with headroom. For an extra 15% at 1440p, enable Frame Generation if you don't mind the slight input lag increase — FH6 isn't a competitive shooter, the latency is barely noticeable.

Enthusiast (RTX 4090 / RX 7900 XTX) — Target: 4K 120+ FPS: Crank everything to Extreme. MSAA 4x. DLSS Quality at 4K with Frame Generation enabled. Ray Tracing High — you have the overhead. This is the only tier where you can genuinely run the game at its visual ceiling without compromise. You'll see 100-130 FPS at 4K depending on the scene. In Guanajuato the CPU becomes the limit and you'll drop to 90-ish regardless of GPU.

DLSS, FSR, and Frame Generation — What to Use When

FH6 supports DLSS 3.5, FSR 3.1, and Intel XeSS. DLSS is the clear winner for image quality — the reconstruction at Quality mode looks nearly native with less ghosting than FSR. If you have an RTX card, use DLSS Quality at 1440p and DLSS Balanced at 4K. Don't go below Balanced at 4K — the upscaling artifacts become visible on fine details like power lines and fencing.

FSR 3.1 has improved significantly over the previous version. On AMD cards it's the obvious choice. On Nvidia cards with 8GB or less VRAM, FSR sometimes avoids the minor stuttering that DLSS's larger memory footprint can introduce. If you're getting frame time spikes on DLSS, try FSR Balanced instead.

Frame Generation is a tradeoff. It doubles your perceived frame rate by inserting AI-generated frames between real ones. Input latency increases by roughly 15-25ms — perceptible but not game-breaking in a racing title. If your base frame rate is above 60, Frame Gen pushes you into the 100+ range and the smoothness is real. If your base frame rate is below 50, don't use it — the interpolated frames expose the gaps between real frames and the image breaks up. For competitive drift zones where precise timing matters, leave it off.

Steam Deck Settings

The Steam Deck can run FH6 at a surprisingly playable level. Set the in-game resolution to 1280x800. Preset Low. Dynamic Optimization On with 45 FPS target. FSR 3.1 set to Performance. MSAA Off, FXAA On. Texture Quality Low, Geometry Low. Shadows Low, Reflections Low. SSAO Off. Motion Blur Off. Ray Tracing Off. Lock the Deck's frame limiter to 45 FPS and set refresh rate to 45Hz in Quick Access Menu. This gives you stable frame pacing and around 2 hours of battery life. It's not pretty but it runs.

You can push to Medium textures and 60 FPS target if you're docked and plugged in — the Deck's GPU scales up on external power. Don't expect miracles at 1080p external though. Keep it at 720p and let FSR handle the upscale.

Stuttering Fixes That Actually Work

If FH6 stutters even on good hardware, try these in order. First, disable Xbox Game Bar background recording — it's been a known stutter source since FH5 and FH6 inherited it. Windows Settings > Gaming > Game Bar > Off. Second, if you're on an Nvidia card, set Shader Cache Size to 10GB or Unlimited in Nvidia Control Panel under 3D Settings. FH6 compiles shaders on the fly and a small cache causes micro-stutter. Third, check your drive — FH6 should be on an NVMe SSD. SATA SSDs work but you'll get occasional traversal stutter when loading new map sections at high speed. Hard drives are unusable for this game. Fourth, close browser tabs and Discord while playing. FH6 is memory-hungry and background apps eating 2-3GB of RAM pushes the game into swap on 16GB systems. Fifth, if stuttering only happens after 30+ minutes, it's likely thermal throttling — check your CPU and GPU temps.

The Windows 24H2 update also introduced a known stutter issue with FH6's anti-tamper. There's no permanent fix yet but disabling Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling in Windows Graphics settings reduces the frequency. Playground Games is aware and a patch is expected.
