This is why drag cars run completely different suspension settings from road cars: you want the rear to squat on launch (for grip) and the front to lift (to transfer weight faster). AWD vs RWD Drag Builds — Which Is Faster?
In FH6, AWD drag cars are faster than RWD drag cars at every class. Period. The traction advantage off the line is insurmountable — an AWD car puts power to all four tires while a RWD car spins its rears and loses the first 60 feet. At the quarter mile, the AWD car is 0.2-0.5 seconds ahead, and that gap only widens on shorter distances. RWD drag builds exist for one reason: realism and purism. If you want to role-play a proper drag racer with a live axle, 315mm drag radials, and a pro-stock launch technique, build RWD. If you want to win, build AWD or swap AWD into your RWD drag car.
The exception: at X class, the power levels are so high that even AWD systems struggle for traction, and some RWD cars (Venom F5, specifically) with extreme aero can hook up above 150 mph. The F5 loses the first 300 feet but gains it back at the top end. On the quarter mile, AWD still wins. On the mile or runway length drags, RWD catches up.
Launch Technique — The 70% Factor
Your launch determines 70% of your quarter mile time. The technique varies by drivetrain and car, but the core principle is: hold RPM at peak torque (not redline), release brake/clutch on green, modulate throttle to manage wheelspin through first gear.
RPM hold: For most cars, peak torque is at 60-70% of redline. A 7,000 RPM redline car typically launches best at 3,500-4,500 RPM. Hold the RPM at this number (not above, not below) before launch. Too low: bog down off the line, lose 0.3-0.5 seconds. Too high: spin through first gear, lose 0.3-0.5 seconds. The exact RPM varies — test your car on the airfield drag strip and watch the 0-60 timer. Adjust launch RPM until you find the fastest 0-60 time for that specific car.
Clutch drop timing: Release the clutch (or brake, on automatic cars) exactly on the green light. Not 0.1 seconds before (red light — disqualified), not 0.1 seconds after (late launch — you're chasing). Reaction time doesn't affect the quarter mile clock in FH6 (the clock starts when you cross the beam, not on green), but it does affect who crosses the line first. Against equal cars, a 0.1 second reaction time disadvantage means you lose.
Throttle modulation: In first gear only, modulate the throttle to keep the tires at the edge of grip without spinning. Full throttle from launch overwhelms even drag tires on high-power cars. Feed the throttle in progressively — 70% at launch, 90% as the car hooks, 100% once you're past 60 mph and the aero is loading the tires. This takes practice per car. The Nevera and other EV hypercars are the exception — computers manage wheelspin, you just floor it.
Drag Tire Necessity
At B class and above, drag tires are mandatory for competitive drag builds. The grip difference between drag tires and the next-best compound (semi-slicks) is 25-30% on launch. A B class car on drag tires will gap the same car on semi-slicks by 0.3-0.5 seconds in the quarter mile — an eternity in drag racing. The PI cost of drag tires is worth it at every class. The only exception is D class, where power levels are low enough that street or sport tires provide adequate grip without the PI penalty.
Wheelie Bar Cars
Some muscle cars in FH6 — the Dodge Demon, the Chevelle SS, the '68 Dart — can equip wheelie bars as a visual customization. Wheelie bars in FH6 are cosmetic only — they do not affect physics, do not prevent wheelies, and do not improve launch performance. Do not spend credits on wheelie bars expecting a performance gain. They look cool, and that's it. If your car is pulling wheelies on launch, your rear springs are too soft — stiffen them by 50-100 lb/in.
Best Drag Strips in FH6
The Airfield drag strip is the primary drag racing venue — a dedicated quarter-mile strip with timing lights, staging beams, and a Christmas tree start system. The festival drag strip (at the main Horizon festival site) is a shorter eighth-mile strip — better for testing 0-60 and launch technique, not for full quarter-mile runs. The highway eastern section is the unofficial roll-racing venue — 2.5 miles of straight highway for top-speed runs and rolling drags. Drag Racing Etiquette and Common Scams
In FH6's drag community, there are unwritten rules that will get you kicked from drag lobbies if you break them. No ramming at the line — brake after the finish, don't pit-maneuver your opponent. No reverse staging — once you pull up to the line, stay there. No AWD-swapped cars in "RWD only" lobbies (yes, people can tell — the launch behavior is different). No blocking — if someone challenges you to a drag, line up and go, don't sit staged for 30 seconds trying to psych them out.
Common scams: people claiming their car is "stock" when it's fully built (check PI in the lobby — it shows even if the player hides their tune). People pulling up in X class cars and claiming they're S2. Pink-slip scams where the loser refuses to sell their car at the Auction House for the agreed minimum. Drag for fun, not for pink slips, and you'll never get scammed.
How to Counter Popular Drag Cars
The meta is predictable: A class = GT500. S1 = Jesko. S2 = Nevera. X = Jesko Absolute. If you know what car your opponent is running, you know their weakness. The GT500 is a RWD car with monster power — it spins if the launch isn't perfect, and a consistent AWD build (R35 GT-R, Evo X with drag tune) will beat an inconsistent GT500 driver. The Jesko at S1 has the best power-to-weight but relatively soft AWD differential settings from the factory — a well-tuned Lamborghini Aventador SVJ with 100% rear diff lock will occasionally gap a badly-tuned Jesko off the line. The Nevera is unbeatable at S2 below 200 mph — don't try to out-drag it, out-build it for a longer distance where the EV's top speed limit becomes a liability. The Jesko Absolute at X class is the final boss — bring another Jesko Absolute or lose.
