Drift tuning isn't about maxing power — it's about making the rear end break loose predictably and hold the slide without fighting you. Here's the setup that works, explained in the order I adjust things.

1. Differential — Do This First
The differential is the single most important part of a drift tune. Set acceleration lock to 90-100%. This locks both rear wheels to spin at the same speed, so when you get on the throttle the rear end kicks out as one unit instead of one wheel spinning and the other gripping. That's the difference between a clean, controllable slide and a car that just half-spins and straightens out.
Deceleration lock at 60-80% keeps the rear planted when you lift off mid-slide. If the rear feels like it's snapping back too hard when you ease off the gas, raise decel lock a touch.
2. Tire Pressure — Low Rear, High Front
Run the rear tires around 20-25 PSI to flatten the contact patch and give the rear more mechanical grip as it slides. The fronts up at 35-40 PSI to reduce rolling resistance. You want the front to cut into the turn and the rear to follow — this split does exactly that.
3. Alignment — Camber and Caster
Set front camber to negative 3 to 5 degrees. At high steering angles the front tire rolls onto its outside shoulder, and negative camber keeps the contact patch working so the front stays pointed where you want it.
Rear camber close to zero or slightly positive actually helps here — it makes the rear break loose more easily. And max out caster at 7.0. Caster gives you more steering angle and better self-centering return, which is why I run max caster on every drift build with no exceptions.
4. Gearing — Match Your Redline to the Zone
A shorter final drive means faster acceleration out of corners, which you need on tight touge sections. But too short and you'll bounce off the rev limiter mid-slide, which kills your momentum. Tune your top gear so it hits redline right around the fastest section of your favorite drift zone. It takes a couple of test runs, but it's worth it.
5. Turn Off Traction Control
This one is non-negotiable. Turn TCS off. The system cuts power at the exact moment you need it most, so every time you try to hold a slide it fights you. ABS you can leave on — you're barely using the brakes while drifting. But TCS off is the first thing I change on every new car, before touching anything else.

The tune above assumes rear-wheel drive — AWD fights you by pulling the front straight, and FWD won't slide properly no matter what you do. These are the cars I'd start with:
- Mazda MX-5 Miata (1994) — 15,000 credits, RWD, front-engine, featherweight. The short wheelbase is twitchy, but that makes it perfect for learning because you feel every mistake.
- Nissan 370Z Nismo — more power and a longer wheelbase, which makes long sweepers smoother.
- Toyota Supra Mk4 — the 2JZ takes boost like nothing else, push it past 800 hp and it stays drivable.
- Ford Mustang Dark Horse — V8 torque lets you initiate slides with throttle alone, no handbrake.
