McLaren P1 Tuning Guide — Best S2 RWD Hybrid Setup

The P1 is my favorite of the "Holy Trinity." Not because it's the fastest — on pure lap time it isn't necessarily quicker than the 918. Because it has the most character. The Ferrari LaFerrari is a work of art, the Porsche 918 is an engineering showcase, and the McLaren P1 is a track weapon built for lunatics. A V8 twin-turbo with 737hp plus an electric motor with 177hp, 903hp total, all sent to two rear wheels. No AWD safety net, no complex torque distribution system to bail you out — just pure violence shoving into your lower back. This car demands you treat the throttle like a real driver, not like a tech enthusiast leaning on an electronic babysitter.

The P1's active aero is simplified in FH6 but the effect is still there. When you hit the brakes in a fast corner, the rear wing tilts up into an air brake — physically it adds downforce and drag at the same time. That behavior is built into FH6, you can't tune it, but knowing it's there matters — because it means the P1's high-speed braking distance is shorter than what you'd calculate from its weight and power. It also means that if you lift off before a corner instead of braking hard, you're throwing away one of the P1's biggest physical advantages.

The P1's biggest weakness: the rear end. 903hp all slammed into the rear wheels, and if you get on the throttle too hard out of a slow corner, the tail snaps like it's been whipped — not a progressive slide, but a sudden, almost unsaveable lateral flick. The V8 twin-turbo dumps torque from the mid-range on up, and if your steering isn't straightened out when that happens, it's a full three-sixty. The core goal of tuning? Make that rear-end twitch predictable.

Stock S2 is where the P1 belongs. 903hp doesn't need touching — it's enough, and past 950hp the PI eats too much budget and you end up downgrading tires and suspension to compensate. Keep the stock 903hp and spend the budget on the chassis.

Tuning Parameters — The Details Matter

Tire Pressure

Front: 30.0 PSI, Rear: 28.5 PSI. The P1's tires are Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R developed specifically for it — extreme semi-slicks. That 28.5 PSI rear looks low, but it's there to maximize rear contact patch under acceleration. The rear wheels are the P1's lifeline — when you're feeding 900+ Nm of torque into two rear tires, a 5% difference in contact patch is the difference between keeping grip out of a corner and not. The 30 PSI front is normal, balancing steering response.

Gearing

Final Drive Ratio: 3.50 (S2). The P1's 7-speed SSG (dual-clutch) gearbox is one of the fastest-shifting in this list — it's an order of magnitude quicker than Lamborghini's ISR single-clutch. The 3.50 final drive is on the long side — the P1's V8 dumps torque in the low-to-mid range, and short gearing makes the low gears too violent to control. Longer gearing lets each gear cover a wider speed band, cuts shift count, and gives you more time to feed throttle progressively out of a corner.

Alignment

Camber: Front -2.2, Rear -2.5. This is one of the few setups where rear camber exceeds front. The P1's rear axle takes huge lateral load mid-corner (engine + battery all out back, weight biased rear), and the rear tires need more negative camber to keep the outside rear tire flat through the corner. The -2.2 front is relatively standard — the McLaren front end is naturally eager to turn in, so it doesn't need aggressive front camber. Toe: Front 0.0, Rear 0.3. That 0.3 rear toe is the highest in all these tunes — that unsettled rear end needs positive toe to calm it down. 0.3 positive toe turns your lift-off corner entry into a controllable process instead of Russian roulette. Caster: 7.0.

Anti-Roll Bars

Front: 28.0, Rear: 32.0. Rear bar stiffer than front — standard practice for a big-power RWD car. A stiff rear bar means the inside rear wheel unloads sooner as the body rolls and the outside rear takes more load — sounds counterintuitive (you don't want to overload the rear), but the outside rear is already carrying 70%+ of the torque under acceleration, and giving its suspension more anti-roll stiffness lets it deliver that power more effectively. The 28 front bar is soft, keeping mechanical grip on the front axle at turn-in — the P1 doesn't need a stiff front bar to "force" steering, it already wants to turn in.

Springs

Front: 650 lb/in, Rear: 700 lb/in. Rear springs stiffer than front — again, standard for a big-power RWD car. Rear engine + RWD means the rear axle needs more support under acceleration to fight weight transfer. 700 rear isn't crazy high, because the P1's factory hydraulic suspension (RaceActive Chassis Control) is already excellent, and FH6 won't let you set springs absurdly stiff. Ride height: lower 0.8 inches. The P1 has a factory track mode that auto-lowers the car — in FH6 you can drop it manually a bit to simulate that.

Damping

Rebound: Front 7.5, Rear 8.5. Bump: Front 4.5, Rear 5.0. Rear rebound and bump both higher than front — this is what makes the P1 special. The rear damping is strong because the rear wheels go through violent compress-rebound cycles when they're hit with 900+ Nm of torque, and you need stronger damping to control that cycle. If rear rebound is too weak, the rear wheel loses grip for a moment as it bounces back after being squatted down by torque — that's where the "bouncy" feeling in the P1's power slides comes from.

Aero

The P1's active aero is managed automatically by FH6 — the rear wing adjusts itself under braking and at speed. If there's an adjustable front splitter, use the cornering bias to boost front-end downforce. Rear wing downforce, if available, at 65% — the P1's own aero is already first-rate, so you don't need a lot of manual rear downforce. Too much just makes the already-unsettled rear end more sensitive to crosswinds at speed.

Brakes

Balance: 53% front, Pressure: 105%. The P1's carbon-ceramic brakes are standard equipment and its braking is top-tier in S2. 53% front balance — neutral-leaning, because the light body plus the P1's active aero adds extra rear downforce under braking. 105% pressure isn't especially high — braking power is already plenty, too low makes the response slow, and too high makes ABS intervene too much.

Differential

Rear differential: Accel lock 75%, Decel lock 50%. That 75% accel lock is the highest of any RWD car here — it's there to split 900Nm of torque evenly between the two rear wheels. Without that lock rate, the inside rear spins through the entire corner-exit phase and the outside rear never gets enough torque to pull the car out. The tradeoff is understeer (high accel lock makes the car feel lazy when you're on the gas). The way to balance it: 75% accel lock makes you unbeatable on exit, but on entry you have to scrub your speed with the brakes first. The 50% decel lock is the same logic — high decel lock binds both rears on lift-off, anchoring the tail. The cost is reduced turn-in rotation — you'll need a bit more steering input on entry to compensate.

Best Race Types

S2 road racing — that's the P1's battlefield. It shines brightest on mid-to-high-speed tracks, especially layouts with long straights into hard braking zones — the active aero kicks in under hard braking and you stop a chunk shorter than the competition. Slow-corner tracks aren't the P1's favorite — its low-end torque is too violent, and in dense slow corners you're constantly fighting the throttle, but once you're out onto a straight you claw it all back. In the rain the P1 is the most capable S2 RWD car here — not because it's especially good in the wet, but because the bar for S2 RWD in the rain is so low that being slightly more composed wins races. Off-road, don't even ask. Drag racing: RWD is never kind to big power, the P1 loses the launch to AWD rivals but claws back on the top end.

Common Tuning Mistakes

Anti-roll bars set equal front and rear. On a big-power RWD car the rear bar must be stiffer than the front — that's physics, not preference.

Setting negative rear toe (toe-out) thinking it adds rotation. The P1's rear end is already twitchy enough — negative rear toe is suicide. 0.2 positive rear toe is the floor.

Rear differential accel lock too low. You set it low thinking high lock causes understeer — then the rear wheels spin like crazy on exit. On a big-power RWD car like the P1, accel lock can't go below 65%.

Driving it like a turbo car — feeding throttle gently and waiting for boost. The P1's electric motor is already delivering torque at low speed, so waiting for the turbos just delays your corner exit. Feed the throttle directly but smoothly.
