The Escort RS Cosworth was born for rally — that absurdly big whale-tail wing isn't for flexing in a McDonald's parking lot, it's a required aero part under WRC rules. The 2.0-liter Cosworth YB engine with its cast-iron block makes 227 hp stock but hits 350 hp without breaking a sweat. At 1,275 kg with AWD, the acceleration response feels like getting kicked in the back. In FH6, the Escort Cosworth's low-speed corner-exit grip is almost cheating in its class — the four tires claw into the pavement like talons.

A-class is Escort Cosworth territory. Push the power to around 320 hp, keep the weight under 1.3 tons, and you'll grind a whole field of modern hot hatches into the pavement in the corners. For B-class rally, the stock state is plenty — 227 hp plus AWD on rough roads is steadier than a lot of 300 hp cars. Just note the wheelbase is short, so high-speed corner stability isn't great — you'll need to catch the tail's movement with the steering wheel on entry.

320 hp in A-class is not too much, not too little — just right. The short-wheelbase AWD lets this car hang tight to much more powerful rivals on twisty tracks. Going up to 400 hp actually hurts — a short wheelbase with big power makes the rear axle's movement on corner exit really hard to predict.

Tuning Parameters — Every Setting Explained

Tire Pressure

31.0 PSI front, 30.0 PSI rear. At 1,275 kg it's not heavy, so you don't need much pressure. On an AWD short-wheelbase car the front and rear wheels share the load fairly evenly, and the 1 PSI difference gives the fronts a bit more braking support. For rally, drop both ends by 2 PSI — you need a bigger contact patch on rough roads.

Transmission

Final Drive Ratio: 4.00 (A-class). The Cosworth YB's torque delivery is very linear between 3,200 and 5,500 rpm, so the gearing is fairly flexible. A 4.00 final drive covers the speed range you see in A-class races while giving 2nd through 4th good coverage in the corners. Don't stretch it too long — the Escort Cosworth's top-speed ceiling isn't high to begin with.

Alignment

Camber: -2.0 front, -1.5 rear. A short-wheelbase car doesn't need extreme front camber — there isn't much roll on entry to begin with. Toe: 0.0 front, 0.1 in rear — a short wheelbase is very sensitive to rear toe, and 0.1 is enough. Caster: 6.5.

Anti-Roll Bars

Pavement: 28.0 front, 30.0 rear. Rally: 26.0 front, 26.0 rear. On pavement the rear bar is stiffer than the front to fight AWD corner-exit understeer. For rally you run both ends equally soft — on rough roads the body needs to roll so all four wheels stay planted, and bars that are too stiff will lift a wheel off the ground.

Springs

Pavement: 500 lb/in front, 450 lb/in rear. Rally: 380 lb/in front, 350 lb/in rear. A light body doesn't need stiff springs. The pavement setup is firm enough to control cornering attitude. The rally setup's soft springs absorb surface impacts, so it won't bounce twice after landing a jump. Ride height: lower 1.0 inch (pavement) / 0.5 inch (rally).

Damping

Pavement: Rebound 7.0 front, 6.5 rear; Bump 4.5 front, 4.0 rear. Rally: Rebound 5.0 front, 4.5 rear; Bump 3.0 front, 2.5 rear. Rally damping has to be soft — high-frequency vibration on gravel needs a fast-responding suspension, and with damping too high the wheels can't keep up with the surface.

Aero

That big wing is the Escort Cosworth's signature feature. On pavement, run the rear wing at 60% downforce — paired with the front splitter. For rally, drop it to 45%; you're not going fast on rough roads, so you don't need much downforce. If you're really running rally stages, flatten the wing to cut drag.

Brakes

Balance: 54% front, Pressure: 100%. At 1,275 kg it's not heavy, so you don't need much brake pressure. For rally, drop to 95% — locking a wheel on rough roads is self-destruction. In rally, don't brake too hard; lean on engine braking and body attitude to scrub speed.

Differential

Pavement: Center 55% rearward, Front Accel 30% / Decel 10%, Rear Accel 60% / Decel 35%. Rally: Center 50:50, Front Accel 35% / Decel 20%, Rear Accel 50% / Decel 30%. The rally setup brings the center diff back to 50:50 — on rough roads the front and rear axles need balanced power, and a rear bias lets the tail swing too much on low-grip surfaces.

Common Tuning Mistakes

Mixing pavement and rally setups. The Escort Cosworth needs completely different springs, damping, and differential settings for pavement versus rally. Run a rally setup on track and you'll understeer to the finish line; run a track setup in rally and you'll get shaken until you lose control.

Ignoring the short-wheelbase character. A short-wheelbase car rotates into corners very quickly — that's both a strength and a trap. A rear anti-roll bar that's too stiff turns that rotation into a slide, and it comes on very suddenly.

Gearing too tall. The Escort Cosworth doesn't win on top speed — it wins on corner speed and corner-exit response. Keep the gearing tight, and trade a bit of top speed for corner speed.
