FH6 Gauntlet — Off-Road Racing Mastery
The Gauntlet is FH6's mixed-surface off-road endurance race — roughly 42 kilometers of dirt, gravel, tarmac, and everything in between. It's the most unique of the five mega-races because it forces you to compromise. Pure off-road setups bog down on the tarmac sections. Pure road setups slide helplessly on the dirt. The Gauntlet demands a car and tune that works everywhere, and that's what makes it the ultimate test of a driver's versatility. You're not just good at one surface — you have to be good at all of them, and you have to switch driving styles mid-corner as the surface changes under your tires.
I've spent more time tuning for the Gauntlet than any other race in FH6 because the balance is so fine. Half a PSI of tire pressure or a few clicks of differential can be the difference between a car that handles both surfaces gracefully and a car that fights you on every transition. When the tune is right, though, the Gauntlet flows like nothing else in the game.
Gauntlet Route Breakdown
The Gauntlet runs a winding loop through the most varied terrain on the FH6 map, deliberately switching between dirt and tarmac to test your adaptability. Here's the sector breakdown:
Sector 1 — Dirt Hills and Gravel Roads (km 0-12): The race opens on loose gravel roads winding through the foothills. The surface is rough gravel with patches of hard-packed dirt — decent grip by off-road standards, but significantly looser than tarmac. The corners are medium-speed sweepers where you can carry momentum if you manage the weight transfer properly. The key technique here is the Scandinavian flick entering tight corners — the loose surface makes rotation easier than on tarmac, and a well-timed flick sets the car up for an early throttle application on exit. The sector has a few sharp crests where the car goes light; avoid steering or braking over the crest and let the car settle before your next input.
Sector 2 — Tarmac Transition (km 12-18): The Gauntlet jumps onto a stretch of paved road for roughly 6 kilometers. This is the trickiest transition on the track because your tires are covered in dirt and gravel from sector 1. The first two corners on tarmac after leaving the dirt are the most dangerous — you'll have significantly less grip than expected until the tires clean themselves. Give it one full corner of conservative driving on the tarmac before you start pushing. The road surface here is a narrow mountain road with Armco barriers and quick elevation changes. Treat it like a touge run — tight, technical, no room for error.
Sector 3 — Deep Dirt and Forest Trails (km 18-30): The route plunges back into the wilderness on deep, loose dirt trails through dense forest. This is the slowest sector and the one where off-road tires pay for themselves. The dirt is soft and deep — the car sinks in slightly and steering response feels numb compared to gravel or tarmac. You need to steer earlier and more deliberately here; the car responds to inputs with a delay on deep dirt. The forest trails are narrow with trees close to the racing line. A few millimeters off-line and you're into a tree trunk that stops you dead. Brake in a straight line before corners — trail-braking into turns on deep dirt is asking for understeer straight into the treeline. The sector ends with a river crossing that's shallow enough to maintain speed through; stay in the center where the gravel bed is packed firm.
Sector 4 — Mixed Surface Run Home (km 30-42): The final sector alternates between short tarmac sections and dirt connectors, switching surfaces every 2-3 kilometers. This constant surface switching is the Gauntlet's signature — you're constantly adapting your driving style. The tarmac sections reward late braking and clean apexes. The dirt connectors reward early turn-in and throttle-induced rotation. The final 3 kilometers are a flat-out dirt sprint to the finish with wide, bankable corners where you can carry big speed if you trust the car's dirt grip.
Best Rally Cars for Gauntlet
The Gauntlet was designed for rally cars. Not trophy trucks (too slow on tarmac), not road racers (too unstable on dirt), but proper rally-bred machines that were built for exactly this kind of mixed-surface racing. Here are the best per class:
S1 Class (900): Hoonigan Ford RS200 Evolution — The RS200 is the unofficial king of the Gauntlet. Its mid-engine AWD platform, massive power-to-weight ratio, and rally-derived suspension make it equally lethal on tarmac and dirt. It transitions between surfaces with zero drama. Average clean lap: 8:10. Alternative: Ford M-Sport Fiesta RS — slightly less power but sharper turn-in on tarmac.
A Class (800): Subaru WRX STI S209 — This is the sweet spot for the Gauntlet. The S209's rally pedigree means it's comfortable on dirt from the factory, and with a proper tune it's genuinely quick on tarmac too. The AWD system's torque vectoring makes surface transitions seamless. Average clean lap: 9:00. Alternative: Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X — slightly heavier but more stable under braking on loose surfaces.
B Class (700): Ford Escort RS Cosworth — The classic Cossie has the perfect balance of power and grip for B-class mixed-surface racing. It's forgiving on dirt (thanks to soft factory suspension) and nimble enough on tarmac to not feel slow. Average clean lap: 10:30. Alternative: Lancia Delta HF Integrale (if available) — the original mixed-surface master.
S2 Class (998): Not recommended for the Gauntlet. The tarmac sections aren't long enough to benefit from S2 speeds, and the dirt sections are too loose for S2 cars to put power down effectively. Stick to S1 and below for this race.
Gauntlet Tuning — The Mixed-Surface Compromise
This is the hardest tune to dial in across all of FH6 because you're optimizing for two completely different surfaces. Every setting is a compromise. Here's the tested formula:
Tires: Rally tires are mandatory for the Gauntlet. Not off-road (too slow on tarmac), not street (too loose on dirt). Rally compound is the exact middle ground — it clears dirt quickly when transitioning to tarmac and provides predictable grip on loose surfaces. Tire pressure at 28 PSI front, 27 PSI rear. The slight pressure differential gives you better rear traction on dirt without sacrificing front-end response on tarmac.
Suspension: Firmer than a pure off-road tune, softer than a pure road tune. Springs at roughly 50-55% of max stiffness — stiff enough to handle the tarmac sections without excessive body roll, soft enough to absorb dirt trail bumps. Ride height at 70-75% — high enough for the deep dirt sector, low enough for decent tarmac aerodynamics. Dampers: bump at 5.0, rebound at 7.5. The stiffer rebound helps the car settle quickly after surface transitions upset its balance.
Downforce: Moderate. Rear downforce at 40-45% — you mainly need it for the high-speed tarmac corners and dirt sweepers where the rear can step out. Front downforce at 55-60% — the front needs grip for turn-in on both surfaces.
Gearing: Balanced final drive. The Gauntlet has roughly equal amounts of slow technical sections and fast open stretches. Set your final drive so the car tops out around 300-320 km/h. Any taller and you'll struggle out of slow dirt corners. Any shorter and you'll hit the limiter on tarmac.
Differential: This is the most important setting for mixed-surface racing. Accel lock at 65% rear, 55% front. Decel lock at 25% rear. The relatively high accel lock gives you predictable power delivery on dirt where wheelspin is constant. The moderate decel lock gives you stability under braking on tarmac without inducing understeer on dirt. The differential is what makes surface transitions feel seamless — if the car feels unsettled when the surface changes, adjust the rear accel lock down by 3-5%.
Brakes: 55% bias to front, 105% pressure. Front bias because you want the car to stay straight under braking on loose surfaces. Rear lockup on dirt is an instant spin. The slightly reduced pressure (105% vs the typical 110-120%) gives you more modulation on dirt where maximum braking force is lower than on tarmac.
Surface Transition Technique
The Gauntlet's unique challenge is surface transitions — the moment you go from dirt to tarmac or tarmac to dirt, the car's behavior changes instantly. Mastering these transitions is what separates good Gauntlet laps from great ones:
Dirt to Tarmac: The car suddenly gains massive grip. If you're mid-corner when the surface changes, the sudden grip spike will pull the car tighter into the corner than you intended. Counter-intuitively, you need to unwind the steering slightly as you hit the tarmac to avoid over-rotating. The first 2-3 seconds on tarmac after dirt feel like driving on ice — the tires need time to shed the dirt. Wait for the steering to feel sharp again before committing to full throttle.
Tarmac to Dirt: The car suddenly loses grip. Everything goes soft — steering response, braking power, cornering force. You need to be ahead of this transition. Brake earlier and more progressively than you would on tarmac, turn in sooner (the car will push wide on dirt), and feed the throttle more gently on exit. The most common Gauntlet mistake is driving the dirt like it's tarmac for the first corner after a transition.
Mixed Surface Mid-Corner: Some corners in the Gauntlet literally change surface halfway through — you enter on tarmac and exit on dirt, or vice versa. The rule is: drive for the exit surface. If you're entering on tarmac but the exit is dirt, brake early for the dirt exit, not late for the tarmac entry. A slow entry with a fast dirt exit always beats a fast entry that sends you wide because you didn't account for the surface change.
Weather — Rain Makes Every Surface Worse
Rain on the Gauntlet is punishing. Wet tarmac is roughly 30% less grippy. Wet dirt is 50-60% less grippy — it becomes slick mud. The surface transitions become even more dramatic because the grip differential between wet tarmac (still decent) and wet dirt (genuinely treacherous) is enormous. In wet conditions:
- Drop pace by 20-25% on dirt sections. The deep dirt in sector 3 turns to mud, and the car will slide on every corner entry regardless of how early you brake.
- The tarmac-to-dirt transition becomes a survival moment. As soon as your tires hit wet dirt after a dry-ish tarmac section, all four wheels can lose grip simultaneously. Straight-line braking before the transition is essential.
- Rally tires are still the right choice in the wet. Their tread pattern clears water and mud effectively. Full off-road tires in the wet Gauntlet give you more dirt grip but cost too much time on wet tarmac.
Best Car Class for Gauntlet
A class is the Gauntlet's sweet spot. A-class rally cars have enough speed that the tarmac sections don't drag, enough grip that the dirt sections are manageable, and the PI restrictions mean the field is balanced and competitive. S1 is also excellent — faster, more intense, and the Gauntlet's most popular class in rivals. B class is perfectly enjoyable but the tarmac sections feel slow.
The car class that serves you best depends on your driving background. If you come from road racing, start in B class — the slower speeds give you time to learn dirt driving techniques without the pressure of S1 pace. If you come from rally games or off-road disciplines, A or S1 will feel immediately natural. I recommend spending at least 10 laps in A class before jumping to S1 Gauntlet — the surface transitions need to be muscle memory before you tackle them at higher speeds.
