Heel-Toe Shifting Guide
Most FH6 players never bother learning heel-toe shifting. And that's exactly why you should. It's one of those skills that separates people who wonder why they keep getting gapped from the people doing the gapping. Once it's in your muscle memory, you won't think about it — but you'll be faster everywhere.
What Heel-Toe Shifting Actually Is
Heel-Toe Shifting is a advanced technique involving heel-toe shifting while braking into corners. The basic idea is simple, but executing it consistently under race pressure is where most people fall apart.

Step-by-Step
- Approach the corner normally. Brake in a straight line as usual. The technique happens during braking, not before it.
- Prepare the downshift while braking. This is where the coordination happens. Your feet are doing two different things at once — it takes practice.
- Execute the technique. One fluid motion. If you do it right, the car stays settled and ready to rotate.
- Release brake, turn in, back on throttle. Because the car is settled, you can carry more entry speed.
- Practice on a familiar track first. I use the Horizon Mexico circuit. Run laps focusing ONLY on this technique, ignore lap times.
When NOT to Use It
heel-toe shifting is great but not always the answer. In slow hairpins dropping 2-3 gears, it gets tricky. In some AWD cars with aggressive diffs, the car basically drives itself and the technique adds complexity without benefit. Know when to use it and when to keep it simple.
Practice Drill
Horizon Mexico circuit. 5 laps focusing ONLY on this technique — no lap time pressure. Then 3 laps at race pace. My times dropped 0.3-0.5 seconds per lap after about an hour of practice. Over a 5-lap race that's 2-3 seconds — P1 vs P5 in a tight lobby.
Real FH6 Performance Impact
I tested heel-toe against standard rev-matched downshifts on the coastal highway circuit using a Mazda Miata NA (manual, no assists). On a car with wide torque band like the Miata, heel-toe's advantage is smaller — about 0.2 seconds per lap. But when I switched to the Porsche 911 GT3 RS with its peaky power band, the gap widened to 0.4 seconds. The difference shows most in tight corners where you're braking hard and dropping two gears — without heel-toe, the rear wheels chirp as the clutch re-engages, which unsettles the car and costs exit speed. With heel-toe, the chassis stays flat and you can get back on power earlier. My advice: learn it on a low-power RWD car like the Miata first. When you can nail it consistently there, move up to something faster.
The most frustrating part of learning heel-toe in FH6 is the controller setup. On a standard Xbox controller, having brake on LT and throttle on RT makes it physically impossible to blip the throttle while braking — you can't press both triggers with one foot. The fix: remap the clutch to LB or A, use manual-with-clutch mode, and use your thumb for the throttle blip while your index finger handles braking. On a wheel setup, it's more natural — your right foot pivots between brake and throttle, blipping the gas with the side of your foot while maintaining brake pressure. I use a Logitech G923 and after about 2 hours of practice I could consistently rev-match downshifts. In FH6's competitive scene, clean heel-toe entries are one of the small margins that add up across a full race distance.
