FH6 Difficulty Settings — Max Credits Without the Pain
Applies to: All game modes | Credit impact: Up to +100% bonus | Affects: Race payouts, AI behavior, XP gain | Sweet spot: Highly Skilled or Expert with most assists off
FH6's difficulty menu is a credit multiplier masquerading as a settings screen. Every toggle and slider changes your race payout. The game wants you to think Unbeatable + all assists off is the goal. It's not. It's about finding the setup that maximizes credits per hour — which means win rate multiplied by bonus percentage. Winning 90% of races on Expert earns more credits per hour than winning 30% on Unbeatable. Here's every setting dissected.
Drivatar Difficulty — What Each Level Actually Does
| Difficulty | Credit Bonus | AI Behavior | Real Win Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tourist | +10% | AI lets you pass, brakes early, never defends | 100% |
| Novice | +15% | AI is slow on exits, still gives position freely | 100% |
| Average | +20% | AI drives the racing line but gives up position when pressured | 99% |
| Above Average | +25% | AI defends inside line, still slow mid-corner | 95% |
| Highly Skilled | +35% | AI fights for position, reasonable pace, can be beaten with clean driving | 85-90% |
| Expert | +45% | AI is fast, aggressive on overtakes, catches mistakes | 70-80% |
| Pro | +60% | AI drives near-flawless lines, punishes every error, rubberbands heavily | 40-50% |
| Unbeatable | +80% | AI has perfect launch, never misses apex, rubberbands to stay +2s ahead | 10-20% without meta car |
The credit number looks bigger on Unbeatable but do the math. At Expert (+45%) with an 80% win rate, you average 1.16x credits per race (1.45 x 0.8). At Unbeatable (+80%) with a 20% win rate, you average 0.36x. Even if you bump Unbeatable to 50% with a meta build, you're at 0.90x — still worse than Expert. The "best" difficulty for farming credits is Highly Skilled or Expert, depending on your skill level.
Braking — ABS On vs Off
ABS On (+0% bonus): brake pressure is automatically modulated to prevent lockup. You can stomp the trigger and the game handles the rest. No bonus, but no penalty either. ABS Off (+10% bonus): you control brake pressure. Lock the wheels and you lose all steering and braking efficiency. On a controller, ABS off requires about 70% trigger pressure instead of 100% — your finger has to learn that muscle memory. With a load-cell pedal on a wheel setup, ABS off is genuinely faster because you can trail-brake deeper into corners. For controller players, the 10% bonus is not worth the consistency loss unless you practice it extensively. I ran ABS off for a month and my average finish position dropped two spots. Turned it back on and immediately started winning again. Keep ABS on, eat the 0% bonus, collect more first-place payouts.
Steering — Auto vs Normal vs Simulation
Auto steering (+0%): the game counter-steers for you. Only useful if you're playing with one hand. Normal (+5%): standard steering with some stability assistance. This is what 95% of players should use. Simulation (+10%): removes all stability assist. The car will spin if you're aggressive on throttle out of a corner. Simulation steering is faster on a wheel because the force feedback communicates weight transfer. On a controller, simulation steering makes RWD cars borderline undriveable above A class. Stick to Normal steering on controller. The 5% bonus difference isn't worth the frustration.
Traction Control and Stability Control
Traction Control On (+0%): cuts power when wheels slip. AWD cars barely notice TCS. RWD cars with high horsepower become much easier to drive but noticeably slower out of slow corners. TCS Off (+15%): full power delivery, you manage wheelspin with throttle control. This is the single biggest assist you should turn off. The 15% bonus is real and the driving experience is more fun. Stability Control On (+0%): prevents spins by applying individual brakes. Off (+10%): car can oversteer freely. Turn both off. The combined 25% bonus is the easiest money in the difficulty menu, and driving without them teaches actual car control.
Shifting — Auto vs Manual vs Manual w/Clutch
| Mode | Bonus | Speed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto | +0% | Slowest | Shifts at redline, never short-shifts, upshifts mid-corner sometimes |
| Manual | +10% | Faster | You control shift points. Short-shift turbos for boost, hold gears in corners |
| Manual w/Clutch | +15% | Fastest | Faster shift time than regular manual. On controller, map clutch to A button |
Manual shifting is worth learning even if you ignore the bonus. Auto transmission shifts at the worst possible moments — upshifting right before a corner exit, holding a gear too long on a straight. Manual w/clutch gives a slightly faster shift animation, which adds up to about 0.3 seconds per lap on a circuit. On controller, bind clutch to A and shift with B/X, pressing both simultaneously. It takes about two hours to build the muscle memory.
Damage, Rewind, and Driving Line
Cosmetic damage (+0%) is the only setting that makes sense. Simulation damage (+15%) means one wall tap destroys your steering and you limp to the finish. The bonus looks tempting but you'll DNF more races than you finish. Rewind On (+0%) is essential — turn it off for the +5% bonus only if you never make mistakes. The driving line: Full (+0%) shows braking zones everywhere. Braking Only (+5%): just the red zones. Off (+10%): nothing. Braking Only is the sweet spot — you learn the track but still get braking references.
Controller vs Wheel Settings
The difficulty menu doesn't change between input devices, but the optimal settings do. On controller: Normal steering, ABS on, TCS off, Stability off, Manual shifting, Braking Only line. This gives +25% bonus with minimal frustration. On wheel: Simulation steering, ABS off, TCS off, Stability off, Manual w/clutch. With load-cell pedals you can actually feel lockup and modulate brake pressure naturally. The wheel setup gives +40% and you'll be faster, not slower.
My Recommended Sweet Spot
| Setting | Recommendation | Bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Drivatar | Expert | +45% |
| Braking | ABS On | +0% |
| Steering | Normal | +5% |
| Traction Control | Off | +15% |
| Stability Control | Off | +10% |
| Shifting | Manual | +10% |
| Driving Line | Braking Only | +5% |
| Damage | Cosmetic | +0% |
| Rewind | On | +0% |
| Total | +90% |
+90% bonus, winnable races, and you're actually learning to drive instead of fighting the AI's rubberband on Unbeatable. That's the setup I've run for the last 200 hours and I've never felt like I was leaving credits on the table.
