FH6 Best Rally Cars — Dirt Masters Ranked

Rally racing in FH6 is the most underappreciated discipline in the game. Most players skip the dirt events, build another 800 hp highway car, and never learn what it feels like to slide a Subaru through a forest stage at 100 mph with gravel spraying off all four wheels. Their loss. Rally requires a different set of skills and a completely different tuning philosophy from road racing — and the cars that dominate on dirt are rarely the cars that dominate on tarmac. After running every rally stage on the FH6 map with every rally-capable car in the game, here's what actually works.

Rally Car Characteristics That Matter in FH6

On dirt and gravel, tire grip is reduced by approximately 40-50% compared to tarmac. This changes everything about car selection and tuning. Power matters less because you can't put it down — above 500 hp on dirt, you're managing wheelspin more than you're managing speed. Weight matters more because momentum carries through low-grip sections — a lighter car slows down less on loose surfaces. Suspension travel matters because ruts and bumps at 100+ mph unsettle a stiffly sprung road car instantly. AWD matters enormously — RWD rally cars exist in real life (Lancia 037, anyone?) but in FH6 the grip differential between AWD and RWD on dirt is so large that RWD rally builds are only for masochists and purists.

The ideal FH6 rally car has AWD, 350-550 hp, weighs under 1,300 kg, has at least 150mm of suspension travel, and has rally or off-road tires. Below those thresholds you're underpowered and undersprung; above them you're overpowered and fighting the car more than the stage.

Best Rally Cars Per Class (B Through S1)

B Class (600-700 PI) — The Rally Sweet Spot

B class rally is the purest form of dirt racing in FH6. Cars are fast enough to be exciting, slow enough to be controllable, and the PI restrictions force trade-offs between power and handling. Every rally car on this list at B class is more fun than any S1 rally car — I'll die on this hill.

Subaru Impreza 22B STI (1998): At B 700, the 22B is the rally king. 2.2-liter turbo flat-four, AWD, 1,220 kg after reduction. Build with rally turbo, cams, intake, exhaust — 350-380 hp. Rally tires (mandatory on dirt — no street tire survives gravel). Rally suspension: front springs 4.5 kgf/mm, rear 4.0 kgf/mm. Ride height at 80% of max. Rear brake bias 65% for rotation on corner entry. Final drive 4.00. The 22B's short wheelbase and boxer engine's low center of gravity make it the most agile AWD rally car in its class. It rotates mid-corner with a lift of the throttle, hooks up on exit, and never feels underpowered at B class.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI GSR (1999): The Evo VI at B 700 is the 22B's equal. 4G63 2.0-liter turbo with Active Yaw Control, 1,250 kg after reduction. Build: rally turbo, cams, intake — 350-380 hp. Rally tires. Rally suspension: front springs 4.8 kgf/mm, rear 4.2 kgf/mm — slightly stiffer than the 22B because the Evo's AYC compensates for the reduced compliance. Ride height 80%. Rear brake bias 65%. Final drive 4.11. The Evo's advantage over the 22B is turn-in — the AYC actively rotates the car on corner entry. The 22B's advantage is mid-corner stability. On tight, twisty rally stages, the Evo is faster. On fast, flowing gravel roads, the 22B is more stable.

Ford Escort RS Cosworth (1992): The Escort Cossie is the European answer to the Japanese rally legends. 2.0-liter turbo inline-4, AWD, 1,225 kg after reduction. At B 700 with rally turbo and bolt-ons — 340-360 hp. Rally tires. Rally suspension: front springs 4.6 kgf/mm, rear 4.3 kgf/mm. Ride height 80%. Final drive 3.90 (longer than the Japanese cars — the Cossie's turbo makes torque lower in the rev range). The Cossie's big rear wing isn't just cosmetic — it generates actual downforce that stabilizes the rear on fast gravel sections. Best European rally car at B class.

A Class (700-800 PI) — The Competitive Tier

Subaru WRX STI S209 (2019): The S209 is the best modern rally car in FH6. 2.5-liter turbo flat-four with 341 hp stock, AWD, 1,370 kg after reduction. At A 800, the S209 with race turbo, cams, and full bolt-ons makes 480-520 hp — right at the ceiling of what's usable on dirt. Rally tires. Rally suspension: front springs 5.2 kgf/mm, rear 4.8 kgf/mm. Ride height 80%. Differential: center 70% rear bias for the Subaru DCCD system. Rear brake bias 65%. Final drive 3.90. The S209's modern chassis is stiffer than the 22B's, which means you can run more aggressive suspension settings without the car becoming unpredictable. Best A class rally car, period.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X GSR (2008): The Evo X at A 800 is the S209's closest competitor. 4B11T 2.0-liter turbo, S-AWC AWD, 1,390 kg after reduction. Build: race turbo, cams, bolt-ons — 480-520 hp. Rally tires. Rally suspension: front springs 5.5 kgf/mm, rear 5.0 kgf/mm (stiffer than the Subaru because the Evo X's S-AWC can manage a stiffer chassis). Ride height 80%. Final drive 4.00. The Evo X's S-AWC system is more sophisticated than the Subaru's DCCD — it manages torque distribution per-wheel rather than per-axle — but the extra 20 kg and slightly higher center of gravity mean the S209 is marginally faster on most stages. Both cars at A 800 are within 0.3 seconds per minute of stage time. Pick your brand loyalty.

Toyota GR Yaris (2020): The GR Yaris is a homologation special — Toyota built it to win rallies, and in FH6 it does exactly that. 1.6-liter turbo inline-3, AWD with selectable 60:40/30:70/50:50 torque split, 1,160 kg after reduction. At A 800 with race turbo and bolt-ons — 380-420 hp (less than the Subaru and Evo, but 200 kg lighter). Rally tires. Rally suspension: front springs 4.8 kgf/mm, rear 4.5 kgf/mm. Ride height 80%. Torque split 30:70 (rear-biased for rotation). Final drive 4.30 (short — the GR Yaris's 3-cylinder needs short gearing to stay in boost). The GR Yaris is the most fun A class rally car — the low weight and short wheelbase make it feel like a go-kart on dirt. It's not the fastest in a straight line — the Subaru and Evo walk it on long straights — but through technical sections it's untouchable.

S1 Class (800-900 PI) — The Weapons

Hoonigan Ford RS200 Evolution (1986): The Hoonigan RS200 is an S1 rally cheat code. Group B homologation special with 650+ hp from a 2.1-liter turbo four, mid-engine AWD, 1,050 kg. At S1 900, the RS200 is faster than every other rally car by 3-5 seconds per minute of stage time. The rear-biased center diff gives it RWD-like rotation with AWD traction, and the mid-engine layout means it pivots around its center rather than pushing the front wide. Build: keep the stock engine, full race turbo and bolt-ons pushing 700+ hp. Rally tires (yes, at S1 — off-road tires cost too much PI in speed). Rally suspension: front springs 5.5 kgf/mm, rear 5.0 kgf/mm. Center diff 80% rear bias. Final drive 3.80. The RS200 is the car you build when you want to win every rally event without trying. It's that dominant.

Ford Fiesta ST RX43 (Ken Block's Gymkhana Car): The RX43 at S1 is the RS200's only real competition. 2.0-liter turbo with 600+ hp, AWD, 1,150 kg. The RX43's advantage is modern suspension geometry — it handles ruts and bumps better than the 42-year-old RS200 design. Build: race turbo, full bolt-ons — 650 hp. Rally tires. Rally suspension: front springs 5.8 kgf/mm, rear 5.2 kgf/mm. Final drive 4.00. On the roughest FH6 rally stages — the jungle trails, the rock-strewn desert sprints — the RX43's modern suspension absorbs punishment that unsettles the RS200. On smooth gravel, the RS200 is faster. Choose based on which stages you run most.

Classic Rally Legends

Lancia Delta S4 (1985): Group B's most extreme car. 1.8-liter twin-charged (supercharger + turbocharger) inline-4 with 480 hp, mid-engine AWD, 890 kg. At A class the Delta S4 is a time machine — it corners like a modern car despite being 41 years old. The twin-charging means zero lag — the supercharger provides instant boost while the turbo spools. Build: keep stock, upgrade to race turbo and bolt-ons. 550 hp at top of A class. Rally tires. Rally suspension: front springs 4.5 kgf/mm, rear 4.0 kgf/mm. Final drive 4.00. The Delta S4 is the best historical rally car in FH6. Faster than the 037, more character than the Delta Integrale.

Subaru Impreza 22B STI (1998): Listed above at B class but the 22B also dominates at A class with more power. The 22B is the most versatile rally platform in the game — competitive from B through S1 with the right build.

Ford Escort RS Turbo (1986): The RWD rally car for people who want to suffer. 1.6-liter turbo inline-4, RWD, 950 kg. At B class with 280-300 hp and rally tires, the Escort RS Turbo is the most rewarding rally car in FH6 — and the most punishing. RWD on dirt means you're constantly managing oversteer, feathering the throttle, and using weight transfer to rotate the car. When you get it right, it's ballet. When you get it wrong, you're facing the wrong direction in a ditch. Build for B class: race turbo, cams, 280 hp. Rally tires. Rally suspension: front springs 4.0 kgf/mm, rear 3.5 kgf/mm (soft for traction). Rear brake bias 55% (less rear bias than AWD — you don't want the rear stepping out under braking). Final drive 4.30. This is the car for rally purists.

Modern Rally Weapons

Beyond the S209, Evo X, and GR Yaris covered above: the Ford Focus RS (2017) at A 800 is the best American rally car (2.3-liter turbo, AWD with drift mode that works on dirt, 1,390 kg). The Volkswagen Golf R (2022) at A 800 is the best European hot hatch rally car (2.0-liter turbo, AWD with rear-biased torque vectoring, 1,400 kg). The Hyundai i20 WRC (not in every FH6 edition — check the car list for availability) is a purpose-built WRC car that dominates at S1 but costs 2.5M CR.

Rally Tuning — The Complete Template

Rally tuning is fundamentally different from road tuning. On tarmac, you want a stiff chassis, minimal body roll, and maximum tire contact. On dirt, you want compliance, progressive weight transfer, and predictable breakaway. Here's the template I start from on every rally build:

Suspension spring rates: 4.0-5.5 kgf/mm front, 3.5-5.0 kgf/mm rear. This is 30-50% softer than road racing spring rates. Soft springs allow the suspension to absorb ruts and bumps without unsettling the chassis. Stiff springs on dirt mean the car skips and bounces — the tires lose contact with the surface, and when tires aren't touching dirt, you're not accelerating, braking, or turning.

Ride height: 75-85% of maximum. You need ground clearance for ruts, rocks, and jump landings. Bottoming out on a compression at 120 mph is how you DNF a rally stage. The trade-off is a higher center of gravity, but on dirt the extra body roll from ride height is less of a penalty than losing a wheel to a rock.

Rally tires: Always. Street tires have no grip on dirt (40-50% less than rally tires), sport tires are only slightly better, and off-road tires are too aggressive — they cost PI and provide more grip than you need, making the car harder to slide controllably. Rally tires are the Goldilocks compound: enough grip for speed, enough slip for control.

Gearing: Short. 3.90-4.30 final drive. Dirt racing has lower top speeds than tarmac — you're rarely above 160 mph on a rally stage — so short gearing keeps you in the powerband and gives better acceleration out of slow corners. You'll use gears 2-5 on a typical stage; 6th gear is for the start-finish straight and the highway transit between stages.

Brake bias: 60-65% rear. Rear bias on dirt rotates the car under braking — the rear steps out slightly, pointing the nose into the corner. On tarmac, rear brake bias is dangerous because the rear can overtake the front. On dirt, the lower grip means the rotation is progressive and controllable. This is the single most important rally tuning change after tires — rear brake bias transforms corner entry on dirt.

AWD vs RWD for Rally

AWD is faster on dirt in FH6. Period. The grip advantage is too large — an AWD car at the same PI as a RWD car will be 2-4 seconds per minute faster on any rally stage that includes cornering. RWD rally is for fun and skill expression, not for winning. If you're entering competitive rally events or Rivals leaderboards, build an AWD car. If you're rallying for the joy of sliding a car through a forest at improbable angles, build RWD. Both are valid; know which one you're doing.

Best Rally Stages to Test Builds

The FH6 map has rally stages ranging from smooth gravel roads to rock-strewn jungle trails. For testing builds, I use three benchmark stages. Desert Sprint (Baja California region) — fast, flowing gravel, tests high-speed stability and suspension compliance at 130+ mph. Jungle Rally — tight, technical, tests low-speed agility and suspension on rough surfaces. Mountain Pass dirt section — mixed surface with tarmac transitions, tests the car's ability to handle grip changes mid-stage. If your build is fast on all three, it's fast everywhere.
