Volkswagen literally means "people's car" in German and the company was founded in 1937 with exactly that mission: build cars regular people could afford, you get the idea, or something. Trust me on this. The Beetle sold 21 million units. The original Golf basically invented the hot hatch segment in 1976. And for all the supercars and hypercars in FH6 with their seven-figure price tags and 200+ mph top speeds, sometimes what you actually want is a car that feels like something you could park at a grocery store , but tuned to embarrass sports cars twice its price on a twisty back road. Enter the Golf R.

VW brings exactly one car to Forza Horizon 6: the 2024 Golf R at PI 760 in A class. No GTI, no Beetle, no Scirocco, no ID.R , just this one all-wheel-drive hot hatch with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a dual-clutch transmission. It's the only A-class car in this batch of brand rewrites and tbh it's a completely different game at PI 760 than at PI 900+. The speeds are lower but the racing is tighter, the margins are smaller, and your inputs matter more because there's less power to cover up mistakes. The Golf R is not the fastest car in FH6. Not even close. But it might be the most honest.

Golf R (2024)

Class: A | PI: 760

The 2024 Golf R is the only Volkswagen in FH6 right now. VW has one of the broadest vehicle lineups of any manufacturer , the GTI, the Arteon, the ID. Buzz, the classic Beetle and Type 2 Bus , and not a single one of them has made the FH6 roster yet. Playground Games has included multiple VWs in every previous Horizon title so seasonal additions are highly likely. For now the Golf R carries the brand alone, and at PI 760 in A class it's a strong foundation.

Driving Characteristics

The Golf R uses Volkswagen's 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system with a clever rear differential that can send up to 100 percent of rear axle torque to either rear wheel individually. In plain English: the car can overdrive the outside rear wheel in corners, actively rotating the rear end rather than just waiting for physics to do it. In FH6 this translates to a hot hatch that handles more like a rear-biased sports car than a front-biased hatchback. Corner entry is crisp without being nervous. Mid-corner the car takes a neutral set and you can adjust your line with the throttle , lift to tighten, power to widen. Corner exit is where the 4MOTION system earns its keep. You can get on the gas earlier than in any FWD hot hatch and the car just squats, grips, and goes. No wheelspin, no torque steer, no drama. Just forward motion.

The EA888 2.0-liter turbo four is a known quantity , this engine has been in everything from the Golf GTI to the Audi S3 , and in the Golf R it makes 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. In A class at PI 760 these are respectable numbers but not class-leading. The engine's real strength isn't peak power, it's the torque curve. Peak torque arrives at about 2,100 RPM and holds flat until nearly 5,000 RPM. This gives the Golf R a diesel-like shove in the mid-range without the diesel's refusal to rev. You can short-shift at 5,000 RPM and barely lose any acceleration because the torque is already falling off anyway. In tight sections where you're constantly between second and third gear this characteristic is genuinely useful , leave it in third, let the torque do the work, and focus on your line.

The chassis balance is the Golf R's best trick and it took me a while to figure out why. The engine is mounted transversely ahead of the front axle (it's basically a Golf, the engine has to go somewhere), which should make the car nose-heavy and understeer-prone. But the 4MOTION rear differential and the torque vectoring system mask that weight distribution almost completely. The car rotates under power in a way that a front-heavy AWD hatchback has no business rotating. It's not natural , it's engineering. And in FH6 where physics are simplified, that engineered rotation just feels like good handling. Don't overthink it. The car is faster through corners than its spec sheet suggests and the reason is German differential wizardry that predates the MQB platform.

The seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission is fast and mostly invisible, which is the highest compliment you can give an automatic gearbox in a racing game. Upshifts are near-instant. Downshifts are rev-matched and smooth. In automatic mode the transmission logic is smart enough to hold gears through corners and downshift under braking. The only complaint , and it's a minor one , is that the stock shift points are a bit conservative, upshifting at about 6,200 RPM when the engine is still making power to 6,800. In manual mode you can wring out each gear fully and the extra 600 RPM is worth a car length on long straights. Leave it in auto for casual driving, switch to manual for competitive racing.

Tire choice matters in A class more than most people realize and the Golf R is a good example of why. The stock tires are performance summer rubber , decent grip, good feedback, predictable at the limit. Upgrading to race compound transforms the car's cornering potential but pushes the PI up noticeably. The decision is basically: do you want a PI 760 car with race tires that corners harder, or a PI 745 car with stock tires that has PI budget for power upgrades? The answer depends on the track. On tight circuits with lots of corners, race tires + minimal power. On highway circuits with long straights, stock tires + more power. There's no universal right answer and that's honestly what makes A class tuning interesting.

Best Events

A class road racing is where the Golf R belongs and the Guanajuato circuit is its happy place. The tight corners reward the 4MOTION rear diff's rotation trick, the short straights prevent higher-powered A class cars from walking away, and the constant direction changes showcase the chassis balance. A well-driven Golf R on Guanajuato is genuinely competitive against cars with 20-30 more PI. I've won races I had no business winning on that circuit purely because the car just works through the technical sections.

Street scene events are the Golf R's second home and for a very specific reason: the car is small. In a class where some competitors are wider American muscle cars or longer German sedans, the Golf R's hatchback footprint lets you thread through traffic gaps that simply don't exist for bigger cars. The acceleration out of corners isn't class-leading but the ability to take lines through traffic that other cars can't take often adds up to more positions gained than raw speed ever could.

Sprint races and circuits with long straights are tougher. The 2.0-liter turbo four runs out of breath around 140 mph and cars with bigger engines , V8 Mustangs, turbo six Supras, supercharged V8 sedans , will reel you in on any straight longer than half a mile. Your only defense on fast circuits is carrying more corner speed onto the straight and hoping the gap you build through the twisty sections is enough to survive. It's a defensive driving style and it requires patience. You're not winning drag races to the finish line. You're winning by being faster everywhere that isn't a straight line.

Dirt and light off-road sections are surprisingly competent. The 4MOTION system's rear torque vectoring that works so well on pavement also works on gravel, and the Golf R's compact wheelbase makes it agile on loose surfaces. It's not a rally car , the suspension travel is too short and the ground clearance is too low , but for the occasional mixed-surface event or a seasonal championship with one dirt stage, the Golf R won't embarrass you. Add rally tires and a slight suspension lift and you've got a genuinely fun mixed-surface build.

Tuning Guide

A class tuning is a different game than S1 or S2. You're working within a tighter PI budget and every upgrade has to justify its cost. The Golf R's stock setup is competent but conservative , VW engineered it for real-world safety and comfort, not FH6 lap times. The three areas where tuning makes the biggest difference: suspension compliance for FH6 surfaces, gearing for the circuits, and differential settings to maximize the 4MOTION system's potential.

Tire Pressure

Drop 2 PSI all around for technical circuits. And the Golf R carries about 60 percent of its weight over the front axle and needs the extra front contact patch for turn-in bite. But the rear benefits from 2 PSI drop as well because the 4MOTION system's rear torque vectoring works better when the rear tires have more mechanical grip. For highway circuits bump pressures back 1 PSI , the rolling resistance reduction is small but in A class where power is limited, every little bit helps on the straights.

Suspension

Stock springs are too soft for competitive racing and too stiff for FH6's bumpy roads simultaneously , an impressive combination of wrong. Stiffen front springs by 10 percent, rear by 8 percent. The Golf R understeers at the limit in stock form because the front end compresses too much under cornering load. Stiffer front springs keep the nose up and the inside front tire loaded through corners. Dampers: stiffen rebound by two clicks all around. The stock dampers are set for ride comfort and the car floats over mid-corner bumps instead of absorbing them and settling. Stiffer rebound makes the car feel more connected to the road. Anti-roll bars: stiffen the rear by three clicks, leave the front alone. This shifts grip balance rearward and kills the stock understeer tendency almost completely.

Differential

The 4MOTION system is front-biased in stock form , about 70/30 front-to-rear under normal driving, shifting up to 50/50 when slip is detected. For FH6 racing you want more rear engagement. Set the center diff to 55/45 front-rear bias if the tuning menu allows it. If not, the rear diff acceleration lock at 60 percent and deceleration at 25 percent will help. The goal is to make the car feel more rear-driven on corner exit while keeping the front wheels pulling to prevent understeer. A higher rear accel lock helps the torque vectoring system do its corner-rotation trick more aggressively.

Gearing

The DSG's stock gear ratios are designed for fuel economy in the real world. Shorten the final drive by 7 percent. This puts third gear right in the sweet spot for typical FH6 corner exit speeds (40-70 mph) and gives you better acceleration out of every slow corner. Don't go shorter than 8 percent , the 2.0-liter turbo runs out of revs quickly and over-shortening the gears means you'll be bouncing the limiter before every braking zone instead of carrying speed through. Seven percent is the number that testing converged on across five different circuits.

Brakes

The stock brakes on the Golf R are adequate for street driving but not for the repeated heavy stops of competitive racing. Upgrade to race-spec pads and rotors. The improvement is most noticeable after three or four laps of hard driving when the stock brakes would be fading and the race brakes are still biting consistently. In A class racing where grids are tight and every braking zone is a passing opportunity, consistent braking performance across a full race distance is worth more than any power upgrade. Brakes before turbo, every time.

Rival Comparison

At PI 760 in A class the Golf R faces a diverse field. The Ford Focus RS (PI 755) is the most direct competitor , also an AWD turbo hot hatch, also European, similar power-to-weight. The Focus RS has a more aggressive rear differential setup (it can actually drift in real life) and slightly sharper turn-in. And the Golf R counters with better ride composure over bumps and more predictable limit behavior. On tight circuits the Focus is faster. On circuits with uneven surfaces the Golf R is faster. Drive both back to back on Guanajuato and you'll feel the difference immediately , the Focus is more exciting, the Golf is more effective.

The Honda Civic Type R (PI 758) is FWD and lighter but can't match the Golf's corner exit traction. The Subaru WRX STI (PI 762) has more power but carries more weight and understeers harder. The BMW M240i (PI 770) is significantly faster on straights but the weight penalty hurts it in technical sections. And the Golf R's advantage is consistency , it does everything well enough that it's never the wrong car for a track. Some competitors are faster on specific circuits. The Golf is fast enough everywhere.

Collection Guide

One Volkswagen in FH6 and it's the 2024 Golf R. Autoshow price is around 45,000 credits. Forty-five thousand. That's less than the price of tire upgrades on some S2 hypercars. For a PI 760 A class car that can compete with vehicles costing three times as much, this is one of the best value-for-credits propositions in the game.

There's no auction house grind for this one , 45k is pocket change after a few hours of gameplay. Just buy it directly and start tuning. If you're brand new to FH6 and scraping together your first garage, the Golf R should be one of your first three purchases. It's competitive, it's forgiving to drive, and the A class racing it participates in will teach you more about racecraft than any S2 hypercar ever could. Volkswagen GTIs and Golf Rs have appeared as seasonal rewards in previous Horizon titles so it may eventually show up for free in the playlist. If it does, you're out 45k credits. You'll survive.

Common Tuning Mistakes

Putting the biggest turbo on before upgrading the chassis. The EA888 2.0-liter can handle a lot more boost than stock , stage 2 tunes in real life push these engines past 400 horsepower reliably. But in FH6's A class PI system, a bigger turbo eats your PI budget and creates a car with more power than the stock suspension and tires can manage. The Golf R already understeers at the limit and adding power without addressing the chassis just makes the understeer worse because you're arriving at corners faster with the same front-end grip. Suspension and tires first. Turbo second. The build order that actually produces fast lap times.

Ignoring the differential settings entirely. The 4MOTION system is the Golf R's defining advantage over FWD hot hatches and leaving it at stock settings means leaving performance on the table. A higher rear bias + stiffer rear anti-roll bar transforms the car from a safe understeering hatchback into a neutral, throttle-adjustable corner carver. The difference is night and day and it costs zero PI. I see people in online lobbies spending credits on carbon fiber hoods and lightweight wheels (which do almost nothing in A class) while leaving the diff at stock. The differential tweak is free. The carbon fiber hood is cosmetic. Spend your attention where it actually matters.

Treating the Golf R like it's fragile. Hot hatches in FH6 can take abuse that would destroy their real-world counterparts and the Golf R benefits from being driven aggressively. Late braking, trail braking deep into corners, aggressive throttle application on exit , the 4MOTION system can handle it. The car is engineered for German autobahn speeds and track day abuse. Drive it like you mean it. The worst thing you can do in a Golf R is drive it politely. The car rewards commitment and punishes hesitation.
