Every road car they build feels like a race car with license plates, and in FH6 that translates to some of the most rewarding driving in the game. If you're willing to meet them halfway.
Four McLarens in the FH6 lineup spread across S1 and S2. And the F1 at 920 PI , still competitive three decades after it rolled out of Woking. The Senna at 945 PI, a GT3 car that someone forgot to tell the road legality department about. The P1 at 940 PI, the hybrid hypercar that kicked off the Holy Trinity era. And the 720S at 930 PI, the one I recommend to anyone new to the brand. Fast enough to matter, forgiving enough to learn on. That's a rare combination in a car with this much downforce. Driving Characteristics
Every McLaren in FH6 is mid-engine and rear-wheel drive. That layout defines everything. The engine sits behind the driver but ahead of the rear axle, so the weight distribution lands around 42 front and 58 rear. What that means on track: phenomenal turn-in response, a rear end that squats and grips under power, and a center of rotation closer to your spine than in any front-engine car. The car pivots around you, not ahead of you.
But. The flip side of mid-engine precision is that the car rotates faster than your brain expects. A mid-engine car pivots around a point right behind the seats. Nail the entry speed and it's magic , the car carves into the apex like it's reading your mind. Come in 5 kph too hot and the rear overtakes the front before your thumbs can react. There's no lazy understeer warning like you get in a front-engine car. It just goes. I spun more McLarens in my first month with FH6 than every other brand combined. The learning curve is real but the ceiling is absurdly high once you crest it. That's the deal McLaren offers and it's a fair one.
The Senna is the most extreme expression of this philosophy, pI 945 and it earns every point through downforce, not horsepower. The active aero is borderline unfair. Through fast sweepers the car generates so much grip that your braking points move 30 meters deeper than your brain thinks is possible. I've logged back-to-back tests at the Mountain Pass circuit , the Senna carries 12 kph more through the long right-hander after the tunnel than the P1 at the same PI. Twelve kilometers per hour. On a single corner. That gap compounds into half a second by the end of the lap. But the Senna punishes hesitation. You have to trust the aero. Lift mid-corner and the downforce vanishes, the car snaps loose, and you're watching the replay from the gravel trap. Either commit fully or don't bother. There's no middle setting. The F1 is completely different and that's what makes it special. PI 920 in S1, naturally aspirated V12, no hybrid system, no active aero. Just 627 horsepower in a car that weighs under 1,200 kilos. The steering is unassisted , literally zero power steering, every ripple in the road surface comes through the wheel. It's the most communicative car in the entire FH6 roster and I don't say that lightly. But it's also the most demanding. No traction control babysitting your inputs, no stability systems doing background work. The F1 goes exactly where you point it and if your inputs are sloppy you'll know on the very next corner. Driving the F1 well feels like an achievement every single time. Driving it poorly feels personal, there's no middle ground with this car and there never was.
The P1 and 720S sit between these two extremes and they're the cars I recommend for actually winning races. The P1's hybrid system fills torque gaps that the Senna's turbo V8 can't hide , you get on the power and the electric motors shove you forward while the turbos spool up. No lag. No waiting. Just go. The 720S is the most livable of the four. PI 930, hydraulic suspension that rides better than anything in its class, and a chassis that communicates clearly without screaming at you. It's fast enough to compete in S2 lobbies and forgiving enough that one mistake doesn't end your race. If you're new to mid-engine cars, start here. Build your instincts on the 720S, then graduate to the Senna when you're ready to chase tenths instead of seconds.
One more thing about tire compounds that applies across the whole lineup, mcLarens ship with mid-compound as stock and they're fine for cruising. Drop to soft compound for technical circuits and the difference is not subtle. Better rotation. Stronger mid-corner hold, earlier power application on exit. On the flip side, hard compound costs you cornering grip but pays back in top speed and stability , the right call on highway circuits and the festival drag strip. I tested this properly: same Senna tune, same track, only variable was compound. Soft tires were worth 0.4 seconds per lap on Guanajuato, hard tires were 0.3 seconds faster on the highway sprint. Pick the compound for the circuit, not the car.
Best Events
McLarens belong on asphalt with corners. Road racing circuits with medium to high-speed turns are where these cars earn their PI. The Mountain Pass circuit is the standout , tight enough to reward mid-engine rotation, fast enough to let the aero work. Coastal Highway is also strong, especially for the Senna and P1 where the long sweepers give the downforce time to build and hold. A well-tuned Senna in S2 online lobbies is genuinely competitive against anything in the bracket. Not "competitive for a McLaren." Just competitive.
Street Scene events work surprisingly well and for a reason that's easy to overlook: McLarens launch out of slow corners. When you're threading through traffic in the Guanajuato city circuit and need to punch through gaps between AI cars, that mid-engine traction advantage over front-engine cars in the same PI bracket is real. Not game-breaking. But consistent. The F1 in S1 Street Scene lobbies is an underrated pick that most players skip because they're chasing the higher PI numbers on newer cars. Don't be one of them.
Speed traps and speed zones. Yes. Every McLaren except the F1 has enough aero and top-end to post serious numbers. The Senna through a speed trap at full send registers velocities that shouldn't be possible given its PI , the downforce lets you carry entry speed that other cars bleed off under braking. Dirt. Cross-country. Off-road anything.
Just don't. The stock off-road grip numbers on these cars are abysmal and that's by design , millimeters of ground clearance and suspension tuned for smooth pavement. Put rally tires and off-road suspension on a 720S and now you've made a bad rally car that's also a bad track car. Keep McLarens on asphalt where they belong. They'll reward you for it every lap.
Tuning Guide
McLaren tuning isn't about fixing flaws. The factory setup is already 90 percent right , these cars ship from Woking properly sorted. The last 10 percent is where lap time lives and it's all in three adjustments: tire pressures, differential settings, and gearing. Everything else is fine-tuning, below are baseline values that worked for me. Adjust from here based on the specific car and track you're running.
Tire Pressure
Drop 2 PSI front and rear from stock for technical circuits. The larger contact patch improves mid-corner grip and the car tracks truer under power through corner exit. Bump it up 1.5 PSI for highway runs where rolling resistance matters more than cornering bite. The corner-entry feel between these two setups is immediately obvious , you'll sense the front end washing wider on higher pressure within the first three corners of your out lap.
Suspension
Stock McLaren springs are too stiff for FH6's realistic road surfaces. Soften by 8 to 10 percent front and rear and the car settles over bumps without giving up responsiveness. For the Senna specifically: drop the front ride height 2 clicks lower than the rear. This shifts aero balance forward and kills the mid-corner push the stock Senna develops when you're not carrying enough speed for the aero to fully activate. Combined with the diff settings below, this fixes the one handling flaw in an otherwise perfect car.
Differential
RWD McLarens: acceleration lock at 80 percent, deceleration at 15 percent. The high accel lock hooks the rear end up on corner exit , critical for mid-engine cars where the weight transfer is already working for you. Too low and you spin the inside rear on every exit. Too high and the car refuses to rotate and pushes wide. For AWD conversions on the P1: center diff at 70 percent rear bias. The P1's hybrid system already distributes torque intelligently. Don't fight it with a 50/50 split.
Gearing
This is the single biggest lap time lever for any McLaren and most people never touch it. Stock gearing is set for real-world Autobahn cruising speeds. FH6 tracks are short and the corners come fast. Shorten the final drive by 10 to 12 percent from stock. The car pulls harder out of every slow corner and stops bouncing off the rev limiter on the back straight. On the Mountain Pass circuit this change alone was worth 0.3 seconds in my timed testing. For the F1 specifically: the six-speed gearbox has very long ratios. Shorten the final drive by a full 15 percent and the car transforms from a grand tourer into a proper circuit weapon.
Brakes
Race brakes before horsepower, every single time. McLarens already have strong stock stoppers but the race compound lets you brake 10 to 12 meters later into heavy braking zones. That gap compounds , five heavy braking zones per lap at 10 meters each and you're looking at real seconds saved by the checkered flag. Handling mods first, weight reduction second. Power upgrades third. Brakes are handling. They've always been handling.
Rival Comparison
McLaren competes in the same S1 and S2 space as Ferrari and Lamborghini in FH6 and the comparison tells you everything about what each brand values. Ferrari gives you mid-engine precision with more forgiveness baked in , the 488 and F8 feel more approachable at the limit than the Senna or P1. Lamborghini gives you all-wheel-drive stability and straight-line drama. McLaren gives you neither forgiveness nor all-weather security. What you get instead is pure mid-engine RWD feedback that no other manufacturer in the game matches for steering detail.
Whether that's what you want is personal. Some drivers hate how twitchy McLarens feel on corner entry and never get comfortable no matter how many laps they run. Other drivers , I'm in this group, obviously , think it's the most satisfying handling model in the game once you stop fighting the rotation and start using it. The only test that matters: run the same circuit back to back with a Senna and a 488 Pista. Same PI bracket. Same tire compound. So conditions. The Ferrari will feel easier. The McLaren will post the faster lap if you're good enough to extract it. So clock doesn't care about comfort zones.
Collection Guide
Collecting all four McLarens has one easy half and one hard half, the P1 and 720S are Autoshow cars , credits and you're done. The F1 and Senna rotate through seasonal rewards and the auction house. So f1 is the tough one. It shows up as a festival playlist reward maybe twice a year and auction house listings are rare and expensive when they appear. When it shows up, buy it immediately. Do not check your credit balance. Do not think about it, just buy it. I waited six months for mine to come back around and I'm not exaggerating. The Senna is more accessible , it rotates through the playlist regularly and auction house prices are reasonable on weekends. But the F1 is the one that separates collectors from completionists. Set an in-game reminder when it shows up as a seasonal reward. Auction house sniping, seasonal completions, wheelspin luck, and the occasional Forzathon shop appearance. That's the full toolkit and you'll likely need all of it for the F1.
Common Tuning Mistakes
Power before aero. The number one McLaren tuning mistake and it turns a precision instrument into a crash waiting to happen. A Senna with 1,500 horsepower and stock downforce settings is not a race car , it's a straight-line dragster that can't turn. The entire point of a McLaren is aerodynamic efficiency. Add power without adding the corresponding downforce and you've built something that's fast in a straight line and helpless everywhere else. Aero upgrades before engine upgrades. The wing and splitter options on the Senna and P1 are worth more lap time than any power mod in the catalog. I've verified this with timed runs. It's not close.
Stiffness worship. People crank spring rates to maximum thinking it makes the car "more responsive." It doesn't. It makes the tires skip over bumps and lose contact with the road on FH6's realistically rough surfaces. A slightly softer setup absorbs imperfections and keeps the rubber on the pavement. The car may feel less razor-sharp on a billiard-smooth track but FH6 doesn't have those. Soften the springs 10 percent from stock, stiffen the front anti-roll bar one click, and the car will actually corner faster than the "race" setup you see on the most popular community tunes. Brake bias neglect. McLarens carry enormous corner entry speed because of the aero, which means brake balance matters more here than on almost any other brand. The stock bias is too far forward , the front tires lock while the rears still have grip to contribute. Move bias rearward 2 to 3 percent and the car settles under braking, rotates better into the apex, and shortens stopping distances measurably. It's a three-click change that costs zero PI and pays back every single lap. Test it yourself at the Coastal Highway hairpin. Brake at the same marker before and after the adjustment. You'll stop shorter, turn in cleaner, and wonder why you didn't do this from day one.
