"Simplify, then add lightness." Colin Chapman's famous words, and Lotus has been living by them since 1948, you get the idea. Trust me on this. In FH6 the Lotus lineup is two cars that bookend the brand's philosophy perfectly: the Emira at PI 785 in A class, a modern mid-engine sports car that weighs less than most hatchbacks, and the Elise GT1 at PI 895 in S1, a 1997 homologation special that was built to go racing and accidentally ended up on the road. 110 PI points apart, same DNA running through both.

Honestly, Tbh, Here's what makes Lotus different from every other brand in FH6: they don't chase power. The Emira makes about 400 horsepower from a supercharged Toyota V6. The Elise GT1 makes around 550 from a twin-turbo V8. Those numbers are laughable compared to the 800+ horsepower monsters in S1 and S2. But the Emira weighs under 3,200 pounds. The Elise GT1 weighs about 2,300. Power-to-weight ratio is the only number that matters with these cars and Lotus's is competitive with anything in their respective classes because the cars simply don't weigh anything. You feel it in every corner. The turn-in is instantaneous. The direction changes happen before your brain finishes the command. Mid-corner adjustments are a thought, not an action. It's a fundamentally different driving experience from the heavy German and Italian alternatives and once you get used to it, everything else feels slow to respond.

Two cars, one philosophy, two completely different executions of that philosophy. The Emira is the modern interpretation: comfortable enough to daily drive, fast enough to thrill, light enough to dance. The Elise GT1 is the raw version: a race car that got license plates as an afterthought, zero compromise, zero comfort, maximum speed. Between them they cover A class and S1 class in a way no other two-car lineup can.

I have driven both of these, and the Emira and Elise GT1 represent two eras of Lotus engineering, 26 years apart but sharing the same obsession with weight reduction and chassis purity. If Playground Games adds the Evija EV hypercar or a classic Esprit through seasonal updates, the brand gains an S2 presence. For now, this pair covers A and S1 with more distinction than many brands with triple the roster.

Driving Characteristics

And the Emira is the best mid-engine sports car in A class that nobody talks about. PI 785 puts it in a crowded field with the Porsche Cayman, the Alpine A110, and the Toyota Supra, but the Emira does something none of them can: it weighs 3,100 pounds with a mid-engine layout and hydraulic steering. The steering feel alone is worth the price of admission. Where most modern cars have electric power steering that filters out road texture, the Emira's hydraulic rack transmits every surface change, every camber variation, every bit of available grip directly to your hands. It's the kind of steering feedback that makes you a better driver because the car tells you exactly what's happening at the contact patches. Most A-class cars feel like you're suggesting a direction and hoping the car agrees. The Emira feels like the car is reading your mind.

But the Elise GT1 is a completely different animal and it's not trying to be anything else. This is a 1997 homologation special, 2,300 pounds, twin-turbo V8, built to satisfy racing regulations that required a handful of road cars to exist. The cockpit is cramped. The visibility is terrible. And the ride quality on FH6's roads is punishing. And it's the most raw, unfiltered driving experience in S1 class by a margin so wide it's not even a competition. The Elise GT1 doesn't have driver aids. It doesn't have comfort features. It has a chassis, an engine, and an implicit challenge: keep up. The twin-turbo V8 has old-school turbo lag, proper 1990s lag where nothing happens for a beat and then everything happens at once. Managing that power delivery through corners requires throttle discipline that modern cars don't ask for. Get on the gas too early and the turbos spool mid-corner, the rear tires light up, and you're facing backwards. Get it right and the car rockets out of corners with the kind of violence that makes modern traction control systems look like cheating.

So the weight difference between these two cars and their competitors is the single most important number to understand. In FH6, weight affects acceleration, braking, cornering, and tire wear simultaneously. A car that weighs 20 percent less than its competitors is effectively running better tires, better brakes, and more power at the same PI. The Emira at 3,100 pounds is roughly 300-400 pounds lighter than a Porsche Cayman or Alpine A110 at the same PI. That's like having a permanent weight reduction upgrade that doesn't cost any PI. The Elise GT1 at 2,300 pounds is in another universe, closer to an open-wheel race car than a road-going GT. The physics advantage is real and measurable: shorter braking distances, higher cornering speeds, faster direction changes. And the trade-off is stability. Light cars get knocked around by bumps, by curbs, by the aerodynamic wake of other cars. The Lotus philosophy works brilliantly on smooth circuits and becomes a handful on rough surfaces. Pick your battles.

And mid-corner behavior is where Lotus chassis tuning really shows itself. Both cars rotate willingly, more willingly than most drivers expect, and the rotation comes from the chassis balance, not from power oversteer. In a heavy FR car you use the throttle to break traction and rotate the car. In a Lotus you simply turn the wheel and the car responds. It's a lighter touch, a more delicate input, and it rewards smoothness over aggression. Jerk the wheel in a Lotus and the car responds instantly, sometimes too instantly. Smooth inputs produce smooth rotation. The car is a mirror for your driving quality and that's either deeply satisfying or deeply frustrating depending on your skill level. I spent my first week with the Elise GT1 spinning out of every other corner before I learned to dial my inputs back to about 60 percent of what I'd use in a heavier car. Once I did, the lap times dropped by seconds. Not tenths. Seconds.

So tire compound on Lotus cars is less about grip and more about heat management. The light weight means these cars don't work the tires as hard as heavier competitors. On medium compound the tires never reach optimal temperature on short circuits and you're leaving grip on the table. Soft compound gets the tires into the temperature window faster and maintains it better, but wears faster on long races. For the Emira: soft compound for races under 5 laps, medium for endurance events. For the Elise GT1: soft compound always, the car is so light that even soft tires last a full race distance without meaningful degradation. The weight advantage compounds here too, lighter cars are easier on tires, so you can run softer compounds without the wear penalty that heavier cars pay. Another hidden Lotus advantage that doesn't show up on the PI number.

Best Events

Road racing on technical circuits is where Lotus cars embarrass the competition. The tighter and twistier the track, the more the weight advantage compounds. Guanajuato is the standout circuit for both cars. The narrow streets and constant direction changes favor lightweight cars that can change direction instantly, and the Emira in particular feels like it was designed for this track. The Elise GT1 is almost too fast for Guanajuato, the power becomes a liability in the tightest sections, but the Emira's 400 horsepower is exactly right for the circuit's rhythm. Mountain Pass and Coastal Highway also work well, especially for the Elise GT1 where the high-speed sections let the aero contribute grip on top of the mechanical advantage.

Street scene events favor the Emira over the Elise GT1 for an unexpected reason: visibility. The Emira has modern glass area and you can actually see traffic around you. The Elise GT1 has the rear visibility of a mailbox and clipping a traffic car at 150 mph is a race-ending event. And the Emira's combination of quick direction changes and decent visibility makes it one of the better A-class street scene cars, especially on routes with lots of traffic weaving where heavier cars can't change lanes fast enough.

Time attack and rivals mode is the secret Lotus specialty. But the lightweight chassis gives you more margin for error in chasing perfect laps because the car responds so quickly to corrections. If you clip a curb or miss an apex by a foot, the Lotus recovers faster than a heavier car because there's less mass to manage. Over a 20-lap rivals session, that recovery speed translates into more clean laps and faster best times. It's not the most glamorous use case but if you're grinding leaderboard positions, the Emira and Elise GT1 are legitimate tools for the job.

Dirt and cross-country are survival mode. The cars are too light, the suspension travel is too short, and the aero is useless when you're airborne. The Elise GT1 on a dirt track is genuinely funny for about 30 seconds and then it's just frustrating. Keep Lotuses on pavement. They're precision instruments, not sledgehammers.

Tuning Guide

So Lotus tuning is counterintuitive because most tuning advice assumes you're dealing with a heavy car that needs help rotating. Lotuses rotate just fine. The challenge is keeping them stable without killing what makes them special. Less is more with every setting.

Suspension

And springs: soften by 5 percent front and 10 percent rear from stock. The Emira's stock suspension is actually well-judged for FH6 roads, the Elise GT1's is not. The GT1 was designed for billiard-table-smooth racing circuits and FH6's roads have more bumps per mile than a rally stage. And the rear softening on both cars helps the driven wheels maintain contact over surface irregularities. Anti-roll bars: leave them alone. The stock bar settings on both cars are balanced for neutral handling and changing them introduces understeer or oversteer in ways that are hard to tune out. I spent two days chasing anti-roll bar settings on the Elise GT1 before admitting the factory got it right. Ride height: drop 3 clicks on the Emira, leave the Elise GT1 at stock. The GT1's ride height is already borderline too low and any lower causes bottoming out on curbs that will spin the car.

Differential

But both cars are RWD, so diff settings are simpler but more critical. Acceleration lock at 65 percent for the Emira, 60 percent for the Elise GT1. The lower lock on the GT1 is intentional, the car rotates so willingly that higher accel lock creates snappy behavior on corner exit. Deceleration lock at 12 percent for both. This is lower than most tuning guides recommend but it works on Lotuses because the chassis already rotates naturally. Higher decel lock fights the car's natural behavior and creates understeer on entry. Let the chassis do the work, the diff is just there to keep the inside rear tire from spinning uselessly.

Aerodynamics

And the Emira has minimal aero adjustment from factory. If you add a rear wing, run it at 40 percent of maximum. Higher settings create drag without meaningful downforce because the Emira isn't fast enough for aero to matter significantly. The Elise GT1 has functional aero. Front splitter at 60 percent, rear wing at 55 percent. The slight forward bias keeps the nose planted in high-speed corners where the GT1's light front end can get floaty. Don't max out the aero. The drag penalty on a car with a 550-horsepower twin-turbo V8 is brutal and you'll lose 15 mph of top speed for a tenth of cornering grip that the lightweight chassis doesn't need.

Gearing

So final drive: shorten by 6 percent on the Emira, 10 percent on the Elise GT1. The Emira's gearing is reasonably well matched to FH6 tracks from factory and only needs minor adjustment. And the GT1's gearing is classic 1990s homologation special, designed for Le Mans straights that don't exist in FH6. Shortening the final drive by 10 percent puts third and fourth gear in the sweet spot for most corner exits and actually improves top speed on circuits because you're not lugging in tall gears. Individual gears for the GT1: stretch first by 3 clicks to make it usable, shorten second through fourth progressively, leave fifth and sixth as overdrives. The Emira: shorten second and third by 1 click each, leave the rest.

Brakes

But race brakes are less critical on Lotuses than on heavier cars because there's less mass to stop. The stock brakes on both cars are adequate for their weight class. Upgrade to race pads if you have spare PI, but don't sacrifice weight reduction or suspension upgrades for better brakes. Brake bias at 55 percent front on the Emira, 53 percent front on the Elise GT1. The GT1's rear weight bias means more rear brake contribution is useful. Pressure at 98 percent. Higher pressure triggers ABS too early on these light cars and actually increases stopping distances. The weight advantage means you're already braking later than competitors, even on stock brakes, so the upgrade is nice to have rather than essential.

Rival Comparison

So in A class the Emira competes against the Porsche Cayman GT4 and the Alpine A110. The Cayman has more power and better build quality, the Alpine is lighter and more exotic, but the Emira splits the difference with the best steering feel in the class. On a technical circuit like Guanajuato the Emira matches the Cayman's lap times despite a 20-30 horsepower deficit because the chassis makes up the difference in corner speed. On faster circuits the Cayman's power advantage shows and the Emira falls behind. Track choice matters more than car choice in this matchup. Test both on your preferred circuits and let the stopwatch decide.

But in S1 the Elise GT1 faces a much tougher field. At PI 895 it's competing against modern supercars with active aero, dual-clutch transmissions, and traction control systems that the 1997 Lotus can only dream of. The Elise GT1 wins on weight and chassis purity. It loses on power, aero efficiency, and drivability. Against a well-driven Ferrari 488 or McLaren 570S, the Elise GT1 is at a disadvantage on most tracks. But on tight circuits where weight matters more than power, the Lotus can absolutely compete. It's a specialist's car. If you're the kind of driver who enjoys extracting performance from an underdog through sheer chassis balance, the Elise GT1 is one of the most rewarding cars in S1. If you want to win without working for it, drive something German.

Collection Guide

So the Emira should be an Autoshow purchase, straightforward credits transaction. The Elise GT1 is almost certainly a wheelspin or seasonal reward car given its rarity and homologation special status. If it's a wheelspin car, there's no guaranteed method to pull it and you're at the mercy of RNG. The auction house is your backup, with prices typically lower mid-week and spiking on weekends when more players are actively bidding. The Emira you can get today. And the Elise GT1 might take weeks. Plan accordingly.

And if both cars are available through the Autoshow, buy the Emira first for A-class racing and the Elise GT1 second for S1. The Emira is more versatile, easier to drive, and competitive in more event types. The Elise GT1 is a specialist tool that rewards skill but punishes casual driving. Having both gives you coverage across A and S1 class with two cars that drive differently enough to justify owning both. They're not redundant, they're complementary.

Common Tuning Mistakes

But adding weight through unnecessary upgrades is the cardinal sin of Lotus tuning. Every kilo you add undoes Colin Chapman's life work. Heavy wheels, roll cages that the car doesn't need, body kits that add drag without adding downforce, all of it makes the car worse at the one thing it does better than anything else. Before adding any upgrade, ask yourself: does this make the car lighter? If the answer is no, skip it. Weight reduction is the first upgrade on every Lotus build, before tires, before power, before anything. Get the car as light as possible and then build up from there. An Emira at minimum weight with stock power is faster around most circuits than a max-power Emira at stock weight. The math is that simple.

And over-driving the car, that is another mistake.. Lotuses reward smooth inputs and punish aggression, and most drivers coming from heavier cars bring inputs that are way too abrupt. You don't need to throw a Lotus into a corner. You guide it. Steering inputs should be about 70 percent of what you'd use in a BMW or Mercedes at the same speed. Throttle application should be progressive, not binary. The car will tell you when you're over-driving it, usually by spinning, and the only fix is to slow down your inputs. Every new Lotus driver goes through this phase. Some get through it in an hour. Some rage quit and go back to AWD Lamborghinis. The ones who stick with it become faster drivers in every car, not just Lotuses, because the car teaches you habits that improve your driving globally.

Converting to AWD. I see this on both cars and honestly, it makes me wince every time. The entire point of a Lotus is the mid-engine RWD chassis balance. Adding AWD adds weight, changes the handling balance, raises the PI, and turns a scalpel into a butter knife. The car will be easier to drive and slower in every measurable way. If you want an AWD car, buy an AWD car. Don't ruin a Lotus trying to make it something it was never meant to be. Keep it RWD. Learn the chassis. Become a better driver. The lap times will follow.
