So tbh, Two cars. Trust me on this. Two philosophies. The Corvette went mid-engine in 2020 and never looked back. The Camaro stayed front-engine because that's what a Camaro does. Chevrolet in FH6 is a study in contrast , the Z06 at PI 850 is a naturally aspirated track weapon with a flat-plane crank V8 that revs to 8,600 RPM and sounds like absolutely nothing else on the road. The ZL1 at PI 810 is a supercharged front-engine brute that makes 650 horsepower and weighs nearly two tons. Same brand. Completely different answers to the same question.
And i've spent serious seat time in both and honestly the gap between them is bigger than the 40 PI difference suggests. The Z06 is mid-engine precision with a screaming engine that rewards revving it to redline every single gear. The ZL1 is old-school American muscle that happens to have really good suspension. They don't compete with each other , they compete with your personal driving style. Which one suits you? That's the only question that matters and I'll help you figure it out.

So the Corvette Z06 is the first mid-engine Corvette in the brand's history and FH6 models it accordingly. Weight distribution sits around 40/60 front/rear and you feel it in every corner. Turn-in is sharper than any front-engine car in the game at this PI. The nose darts toward the apex the moment you breathe on the steering wheel. And the flat-plane crank V8? It doesn't build power like a normal engine. It screams. Power lives above 5,000 RPM and the engine note changes from a rumble to a howl right around 6,000 where the real work happens. You need to keep this thing revving. Short-shifting costs you half a second per corner because the torque below 4,500 RPM is honestly not great for a car with this much top-end capability.
But there's a catch. The Z06 has less downforce than you'd expect for an S1 mid-engine car. Through high-speed sweepers it floats more than the GT3 RS or any of the purpose-built track specials. You feel it around 140 mph where the chassis gets light and the steering goes a bit vague. It's not dangerous , the car tells you what's happening , but it limits how hard you can push on fast circuits. The Z06 is a momentum car disguised as a power car and the drivers who figure that out are the ones winning races with it.
And the Camaro ZL1 is simpler to describe but harder to drive fast. Front engine. Rear drive. Six hundred and fifty supercharged horsepower. And the weight. Nearly two tons of it. On paper this combination shouldn't work but GM's magnetic ride suspension is absurdly good and FH6 models it faithfully. The car hides its weight through medium-speed corners by using the suspension to manage body roll in ways that physics says shouldn't be possible. But the weight comes back at the extremes. Heavy braking zones. Tight hairpins. Anywhere you're asking the front tires to do two things at once. The ZL1 understeers when you overdrive it and the fix isn't more throttle , it's patience. Let the nose settle before you turn in. Let the weight transfer happen. The car rewards smoothness but unlike the Z06 it's not because of precision engineering. It's because you're managing mass.
So the power delivery difference between these two engines is the real story. The Z06's LT6 is naturally aspirated and the torque builds gradually as revs climb. You can modulate throttle mid-corner with real precision. The ZL1's LT4 is supercharged and torque arrives all at once, right off idle. Corner exit in the ZL1 is either perfect or disaster with almost no in-between. The margin for error on throttle application is maybe half what it is on the Z06. But when you get a clean exit the ZL1 punches harder. That supercharger shove from 2,500 to 5,500 RPM is brutal and it gaps cars that should be faster on paper.
But tire compound is where these two converge. On both cars, soft compounds on technical circuits are worth three tenths minimum , I've tested this back to back on Guanajuato and the grip improvement through the tight sections more than offsets the top-speed penalty. On highway sprints and fast circuits like Coastal Highway, harder compounds win because the aerodynamic drag at high speed makes the extra rolling resistance from soft tires a real liability. But both Chevrolets are pavement cars. Period, or something, and all that. Road racing is where they live and anything off the asphalt is just asking for trouble. The Z06 dominates medium-speed technical circuits where its mid-engine rotation and high-RPM power band can stretch their legs. Guanajuato is a standout track for the Vette , the constant direction changes and elevation shifts play perfectly to its strengths. The ZL1 prefers faster flowing circuits where it can use its power advantage and the weight hides better through sweeping corners. Coastal Highway and Mountain Pass are both ZL1 territory.
And street scene is viable for both but for different reasons. The Z06's sharp turn-in makes navigating traffic gaps feel surgical. You see a gap, you point the nose, and the car responds instantly. The ZL1's advantage in street scene is the opposite: raw power out of slow corners after traffic checks. AI traffic forces you to brake harder than racing lines demand, which means more slow-corner exits, which is exactly where supercharged torque pays off most. Different approaches, both functional.
So drag strip at the festival. The ZL1 is actually competitive here in A-class with the right gearing. The supercharger gives it a launch advantage over turbo cars that need to spool. And the Z06 is mediocre on the strip , that high-RPM power band doesn't help when you're starting from a dead stop. It's fine for casual drags with friends but don't expect to win brackets.
But dirt. Cross-country. Don't. These cars have zero off-road DNA and the stock ride height means you'll bottom out on jumps that trucks clear without noticing. Save yourself the frustration. Asphalt only.

Differential
And z06: the car is mid-engine RWD from factory. Run 100 percent rear, acceleration lock at 70 percent, deceleration at 15 percent. Lower decel lock than most cars because the Z06 already has strong engine braking at high RPM and too much decel lock creates instability on corner entry. ZL1: same RWD setup but acceleration lock at 85 percent. The higher lock is necessary because the supercharged torque spike needs help distributing power evenly. Without it one wheel spins while the other sits there and you lose the exit. The ZL1 needs more diff lock than you think it does and the stopwatch proves it.
Gearing
And this is the biggest lap time lever on both cars and most people never touch it. Z06: shorten final drive by 10 percent. The stock ratios are set for a theoretical top speed that only matters on one straight in the entire game. Shortening gets you into the 5,000-plus RPM sweet spot faster out of every slow corner. ZL1: shorten final drive by 8 percent. Less aggressive than the Z06 because the supercharger provides strong mid-range torque even at lower RPM. On some tracks this change alone is worth four tenths. Test it yourself , do five laps stock gearing, five with the shortened final drive, and tell me the stopwatch is wrong.
Brakes
And race brakes before horsepower. Every time. The ZL1 in particular needs them because of its weight , stopping nearly two tons from 150 mph takes real hardware. Race-spec stoppers let you brake 10 meters deeper into every corner and that gap compounds across a full lap into time savings that power mods can't match. The Z06 is lighter and benefits less dramatically but the principle holds. Braking later is the cheapest lap time you'll ever buy. Handling mods first, weight reduction second, power third. Brakes live in the handling bucket where they belong.
Rival Comparison
And the Z06's natural rival is the Ford GT at PI 910. Both are mid-engine American supercars. The GT has active aero and is faster through high-speed corners. The Z06 has a better engine note and sharper low-speed turn-in. Lap time comparison depends entirely on the track. On Coastal Highway the GT's aero advantage wins by about 0.8 seconds. On Guanajuato the Z06's low-speed agility wins by about 0.4 seconds. They're close enough that driver preference genuinely matters more than car choice.
So the ZL1 versus the Mustang Dark Horse is the classic Camaro-versus-Mustang fight and in FH6 it's almost dead even. The Mustang has slightly better mid-corner feel because it carries less weight.
